What are the different trophic levels? Explain each level with an example.

The four types of trophic levels with examples are given below:

First trophic level: Producers are the base of a food chain that trap solar energy and prepare food from inorganic materials through the process of photosynthesis. Examples include all green plants (terrestrial food chain) and phytoplanktons (aquatic food chain).

Second trophic level: The animals which feed on plants called herbivores or primary consumers form the second trophic level. Examples include grasshopper, rabbit, deer, etc.

Third trophic level: The animals which feed on the primary consumers form the third trophic level. They are also referred to as secondary consumers. Examples include fox, frog, snakes (legless reptile), etc.

Fourth trophic level: The animals which feed on the flesh of other animals are called carnivores, whose examples include lions, tigers, etc. These organisms form the fourth trophic level in the terrestrial ecosystem. Also, large fishes in the aquatic ecosystem form the fourth trophic level.
