The rocks found in the Earth's crust are made up of mixture of substances. Some of them are made up of a large quantity of metal or metal compound, and could be used for its extraction. The minerals from which metals are extracted profitably and conveniently are known as ores. Ores are the rocks from which metals are obtained. For example, the main ore of aluminium is known as bauxite. It is mainly aluminium oxide. Similarly, sodium is extracted from rock salt, which basically is sodium chloride. The extraction of metals from their ores is known as metallurgy.
