Give an account of the Northern Plains of India.

The northern plain was created by the interaction of three major river systems, namely the Indus, the Ganga, and the Brahmaputra, as well as their tributaries. The soil in this plain is alluvial. This fertile plain was created over millions of years by the deposition of alluvium in a large basin at the foothills of the Himalayas.

It covers an area of $7$ lakh square metres. The plain, which is about $2400$ miles long and $240$ to $320$ miles wide, is a densely populated physical division. It is a very productive agricultural region of India due to its rich soil cover, sufficient water supply, and favourable climate.

The Northern Plain is split into three parts:

The Punjab plain is the western portion of the Northern Plain. It is created by the Indus and its tributaries, and the majority of it is located in Pakistan. The Indus and its tributaries, the Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas, and Satluj, all flow from the Himalayas.
The Ganga plain stretches between the Ghaggar and Teesta rivers. The plain extends through the northern states of Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and, to a lesser extent, Jharkhand. The Ganga plain also reaches all the way to Bengal in the east.
Further towards the east, in Assam lies the Brahmaputra plain.
