Ions are electrically charged particles that are created when atoms or molecules receive or lose electrons. A nucleus is surrounded by electrons in an atom. An atom becomes negatively charged and forms a negative ion when it receives one or more electrons. On the other hand, when an atom gains one or more electrons, it changes its charge and creates a negative ion.
