A child staying in a coastal region tests the drinking water and also the sea water with his tester. He finds that the compass needle deflects more in the case of sea water. Can you explain the reason?

A liquid that can conduct electricity is called electrolyte. When current passes through electrolytes, it decomposes into its constituent ions. These ions can conduct electricity within the electrolytes.

Electrolytes are of two types-

a) In case of the electrolytes have a higher concentration of ions, they are called strong electrolytes. Example is sea water.

b) In case the electrolytes that have low amount ions, te=hey are called weak electrolytes. Example is drinking water.

Since drinking water are weaker than sea water in conducting electric current, the amount of current produced in f=drinking water is much smaller than the sea water. Hence, the deflection of compass is less in case of drinking water than that of the sea water.
