Let the number of students be $x$ . So, we have $x \times x = x^{2} = 9216$

$\Rightarrow x = \sqrt{9216}$

Perform division method to find $\sqrt{9216}$ as follows:

$\begin{matrix} 9 & 6 \\ 9 & 9 & 2 & 1 & 6 \\ - & 8 & 1 \\ 186 & 1 & 1 & 1 & 6 \\ - & 1 & 1 & 1 & 6 \\ 0 \end{matrix}$

$\Rightarrow \sqrt{9216} = x = 96$

$\Rightarrow$ Number of students $= 96$
