During the reign of Aurangzeb, Maratha leader Shivaji gradually became powerful. But the Mughal emperor could not tolerate the growing power of Shivaji.

To curb the power of Shivaji, he sent an army against Shivaji at Pune under the leadership of Shaista Khan. Shaista Khan captured many of Shivaji’s territories, forts and Pune. In $1663$ A.D., Shivaji was able to defeat him and recaptured his territory. In $1667$ A.D. when Shivaji and his son reached Agra to meet Aurangzeb, he imprisoned them. In $1674$ , A.D Shivaji declared himself an independent ruler. He died in $1680$ 0 A.D.

After the death of Shivaji, his eldest son Sambhaji and youngest son Raja Ram continued their struggle against the Mughals.
