What are the Assisted Reproductive Techniques practiced to help infertile couples? Describe any three techniques.

Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) refers to the medical procedures that are used to treat infertility. Some techniques used in assisted reproductive technologies are as follows-

(i) Test tube baby (In-vitro Fertilisation)- It is a process of fertilisation where an egg is fused with sperm in vitro. An ovum is removed from the woman's ovary and the sperm is allowed to fertilise it, in a controlled environment. When the zygote forms eight (8) blastomeres, it is transferred to the fallopian tube by the process, Zygote Intra Fallopian Transfer (ZIFT). When the zygote divides into more than eight (8) blastomeres, then it is transferred to the uterus by a process called Intra-Uterine Transfer (IUT).

(ii) Artificial insemination- This technique is performed when there is an inability of a male partner to copulate with the female or have a low sperm count. In Artificial insemination, the sperms are collected from either husband or a healthy donor and are introduced into either the uterus or vagina of the female.

(iii) Gamete Intra Fallopian Transfer (GIFT)- In this technique, an ovum is removed from a woman's ovary and placed in one of the fallopian tubes along with sperms so that the fertilisation takes place.
After the fertilisation of sperms with egg, a zygote is formed. The zygote then gets implanted in the uterus and further development takes place.
