Phosphates in water enhance algae growth. Such profuse growth of algae covers the water surface. This process in which nutrients enriched water bodies supports a dense plant population, which kills animal life by depriving it of oxygen and results in subsequent loss of biodiversity is known as Eutrophication. The warming of the earth due to remission of the sun's energy absorbed by the earth. The remission of earth's energy is absorbed by greenhouse gases and water vapours present near the earth's surface and then its radiation back to the earth is called a greenhouse effect. So the temperature of the Earth is increased is called global warming. These may contain phosphates as additives. The addition of phosphorus to water, in the form of the phosphate anion PO 4 3 – , encourages the formation of algae, which reduces the dissolved oxygen concentration of water.
