Respiration is a biochemical or metabolic process through which a living organism generate energy. It occurs at two-levels that are:

Body level: Oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged between the body and surrounding within the lungs in the case of respiration occurring at body level. In this process, the oxygen is taken up inside the body through inhalation, which then reaches the lungs. Then through alveoli, oxygen gets diffused into the bloodstream, which then reaches all the cells via the circulatory system.

Cellular level: Respiration at the cellular level involves the breakdown of organic molecules (carbohydrate, protein, fats, etc.) to generate energy. In this process, the absorbed biomolecules, especially glucose, get broken down into simpler molecules with the involvement of the transported oxygen and releases energy.
