The landmass or the solid crust of rocks that form the surface of the earth is called the lithosphere. 'Lithos' is a Greek word meaning rock. The surface of the earth is made up of land and water. The land covers about 29 percent and water about 71 percent of the earth's surface. It includes all types of landmasses, which provide living space for humans, animals, and plants. The earth's crust includes the continents as well as the ocean basins ie land beneath the ocean.
