India is the birthplace of four religions, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, and Jainism. During the Vedic era, people worshipped the nature gods and Goddesses. During $600$ BCE, India had witnessed the emergence of Buddhism and Jainism. People were deeply influenced by the preaching of Lord Buddha and Mahavira. Besides Hinduism, these two religions also became important religions of India. During the Delhi Sultanate Period, Islam had arrived in India. Gradually it also has become important religion of the subcontinent. Synchronisation of both cultures had created a new culture in this period. It was called Indo-Islamic culture.

During the Medieval period, the Bhakti movement started a new era in Indian society. Before that People were religious, but Indian society was plagued by superstition. People were more scared of the religious heads and saints than Kings. Due to this, many opportunists took undue advantage of them. People were ignorant about the main philosophies which were propagated by religious books like the Vedas, Puranas, etc. The society was caste-based and lower caste people were suppressed by the upper caste. The teaching of Bhakti saints had a deep impact on society. The social and political conditions of that period made people choose the paths of Bhakti.

With the Europeans, Christianity also arrived in India. Christian missionaries made a great impact on society. The enlightenment of English education helped to eradicate superstitions from Indian society.
