Akbar inherited an Empire that stood on shaky legs. With the untimely death of Humayun, Akbar became the Emperor at the age of $13$ . It is to the credit of Bairam Khan, that the Mughal throne was secured for Akbar from the attack of Hemu in the Second Battle of Panipat. Soon, Akbar took complete control of the Empire in his hands and started the expansion of the Empire. He further proceeded to conquer the regions of Jaunpur, Malwa, and Gondwana. Akbar was well aware of the importance of nobility in his Empire. He was successful in keeping various noble factions like the Rajputs, Iranians, Arabs, and Turkish in check. He was also well aware of the important role that Rajputs and the Rajputana region played. As a result, he entered into various matrimonial alliances to keep friendly relations with the Rajas of various regions. However, some of them who refused to accept Mughal authority were subdued byways of war, such as the Rajputs of Mewar and Ranthambore.

Apart from expanding the empire, Akbar instituted various monumental changes during his reign. He abolished the Jiziya pilgrimage tax that was levied on the non-Muslim population. Akbar was also a very tolerant ruler. He often conducted religious discussions with the leader of various religions at the Ibadat Khana at Fatehpur Sikri. This even led to Akbar propagating the Din-i-Ilahi, a syncretic faith that was based on morality and piety. Akbar kept the Ulemas or the Islami religious scholars in control and did not allow them to meddle in the affairs of the state. All these factors led to Akbar becoming the greatest of the Mughal rulers.
