Electroplating is the process of coating a thin layer of one metal over another by electrolysis. Electroplating is one of the most common applications of the chemical effects of electric current. It is used in many fields. Iron is used in bridges and automobiles to provide strength. However, iron tends to corrode and rust. Hence, a coating of zinc is electroplated on iron to protect it from corrosion and the formation of rust.

The conducting rods connected to the battery and immersed in the electrolyte are called electrodes. Electrodes carry the current from or to the source. There are two types of electrodes: Anodes and cathodes. The electrode at which the oxidation process occurs, and it is positively charged electrode is known as the anode whereas the electrode at which the reduction process takes place and is negatively charged electrode is known as the cathode.
