The word slave means, a person who is legally a property or bound to obey another person. However, during the period of the Delhi Sultanate slaves were valued and were an important part of the society. For instance, the first dynasty to rule the Delhi Sultanate is known as the Slave or the 'Mamluk Dynasty'.

Slaves were given responsibility and administrative control during the period of the Delhi Sultanate. For example, Muhammad Ghori died without an heir. He divided his empire amongst his four slaves. The region of Delhi was handed over to Qutubuddin Aibak who established the Mamluk Dynasty in Delhi. In Turkish the Word Mamluk means "Slave."
