The surroundings of living organisms which provide them with suitable conditions to live, breed and survive are known as habitats. Habitats provide food to eat, water and shelter for organisms. Habitats are of different types. Aquatic, terrestrial, desert and grasslands are types of habitats.

Aquatic habitat: Organisms living in water bodies are known as aquatic organisms and the surroundings where they get food and shelter is known as aquatic habitat. Oceans, seas, rivers, lakes and ponds are examples of aquatic habitat. These organisms are adapted to take in oxygen from water and some animals breathe through blow holes.

Terrestrial habitat: The habitats on land are known as terrestrial habitats. They are of three types:

Desert: All animals are adapted to survive in the hot desert climate. Desert plants do not have leaves and photosynthesis takes place in stems.

Mountain: Mountain plants are cone shaped and their leaves have needle-like structure. Animals have thick fur to protect them from cold.

Grasslands: These have tall grasses that help the animals to camouflage themselves from their predators.
