It is further classified into subgroups based on different criteria, hence various systems of classifications of plants are there such as artificial, natural, phylogenetic, etc. Among these, the artificial system of classification is the least accurate and phylogenetic classification is the most effective one.

Artificial system of classification is based on the comparison of one or few superficial morphological characteristics like habits, number, shape or colour of leaves, etc. It separated the closely related species of plants. These characters are very common in almost all organisms. In this system, the vegetative characters of the plants are mainly considered. These are easily influenced by various environmental factors. It does not demonstrate phylogenetic relationships. Hence, this system of classification is less effective than others.

The phylogenetic system of classification was initiated by Engler and Prantl. It is based on the fossil records of different areas of studies like anatomy, morphology, physiology, etc. Here, the flowering plants are placed in ascending series related to the complexity of floral morphology. This type of classification is achieved by analysing the DNA between the organisms and their ancestors.
The main advantage of phylogenetic classification is that this system is in conformation with the modern views of the phylogeny. Hence, in this system, the rearrangement of taxonomic characters are taken place based on the evolutionary relationship of organisms. Families and order in this system are of small size. This classification uses information from different resources to solve the problems of classification. Hence, this system of classification is most effective.
