Describe briefly the life cycle of pteridophytes.

Pteridophytes are primitive seedless vascular plants which have conspicuous sporophytic plant body and inconspicuous gametophytes. The main plant body is a sporophyte which is differentiated into roots, stem and leaves. It produces haploid spores by meiotic division, inside the sporangia. These spores germinate to form independent, multicellular, haploid gametophyte called prothallus.

The prothallus bears male sex organ called antheridium and archegonium as a female sex organ. The antheridium produces flagellated antherozoids or male gametes and flask-shaped archegonium produces a single egg (female gamete). During fertilization, the male and female gametes fuse to form a diploid zygote.

The zygote develops into multicellular well-differentiated sporophyte which is the dominant phase of the pteridophytes. The pattern of the life cycle in pteridophytes is called the haplodiplontic life cycle.
