Inflorescence refers to the arrangement of a cluster of flowers on a floral axis. The inflorescence is categorised into two types depending upon whether the apex gets converted into a flower or continues to grow, such as racemose and cymose.

Racemose inflorescences: In this type, the main axis continues to grow and flowers develop laterally in an acropetal succession on the main peduncle or branches. The racemose inflorescence has different categories, which are given below.

Simple raceme inflorescence: In this type, flowers with pedicel are arranged in an acropetal manner. Example: Crotalaria

Umbel type inflorescence: In this type, flowers appear to have arisen from the same point of the peduncle. Example: Carrot

Spikes inflorescence: In this type, an acropetal arrangement of sessile flowers on the peduncle is seen. Example: Achyranthes

Spadix inflorescence: In some plants, sessile unisexual and neuter flowers arranged in acropetal succession protected by a modified bract called 'spathe'. This type of inflorescence is called spadix inflorescence. Example: Musa, Cocos

Head inflorescence: In some plants, unisexual and bisexual sessile flowers develop centripetally on a condensed peduncle. Such type of inflorescence is called a head inflorescence. Example: Sunflower
