Big dams have raised a number of controversies, so often they come under great opposition-

1) The main reason why big dams have come under attack is authorities have failed to rehabilitate the communities that have been displaced to make way for water reservoirs. There is not enough land available for their rehabilitation. The poor people who sacrifice their land gain the least and the beneficiaries are the rich industrialists and big farmers. The locals have gained nothing in many cases, while some people outside the dam area may have benefited from the project.

In Narmada Bachao Andolan, Sardar Sarovar Dam was built in Gujarat on river Narmada. It submerged a large number of trees. The poor people who lost their lands have failed to get rehabilitation facilities promised by the government. The same problem was raised by the construction of the Rihand dam.

2) It is also thought that building a dam in an earthquake-prone area might cause disaster if an earthquake strikes. Tihari dam in Uttarakhand was long held up due to this reason.
