The main ore of mercury metal is cinnabar. Its chemical name is mercuric sulphide or mercury( II ) sulphide. The chemical formula of cinnabar is HgS . It is a soft, red to reddish brown ore. It is also known as Vermilion. Mercuric sulphide is a crystalline, water-insoluble, poisonous compound.
