Energy is required for various vital activities of organisms. This energy is obtained from food. Some important food plants are as follows:

Cereals: Cereals are members of the grass family (Gramineae or Poaceae). These are the main source of starch which is used as a respiratory substrate in the human body. Some important cereals are wheat, rice, maize, pearl-millet, etc.

Pulses: Pulses are the members of family Leguminosae. These are a good source of protein. Some important pulses are gram, pea and soybean.

Oil yielding plants: These are complex organic compounds which are made up of hydrocarbon, ester, alcohol, aldehyde, etc. We get edible, non-edible and perfumed oils from plants. Some oil yielding plants are groundnut, sesamum, coconut, soybean, castor, sandal, clove, etc.

Spices: Spices are seed, fruit, root, bark, or other plant substances primarily used for colouring, flavouring or preserving food. Some important spices are cloves, turmeric, cinnamon, cumin, fennel, ginger, black pepper, cardamom, etc.

Beverages: Tea and coffee are the most commonly used beverages.

Vegetables: These are the chief source of vitamins, minerals, fibres, water, etc. These may be obtained from various parts of plants like root, stem, leaf, flower, fruit, seed, etc. Some vegetables are carrot, radish, potato, spinach, tomato, etc.

Fruits: The structure formed after fertilization of the ovary of a flower is called fruit. Some fruits are mango, papaya, orange, banana, etc.
