Tips & Strategies to Avoid Negative Marking in NEET 2022

Negative marking is the biggest setback for any competitive exam which is why guesswork should be a big no. A single wrong answer can impact the student’s rank in thousands in NEET and we are here to help you with the best strategies to avoid negative marking in NEET 2022. Students attempting NEET this year should bear these tips & tricks in mind to avoid negative markings in NEET while attempting the exam.

Practice NEET Exam Questions

1. Get Well-versed With All the Concepts

Although it is not possible to totally avoid choosing the wrong answer, students can reduce the probability of marking more wrong answers. The point of negative marking arises if the candidate has chosen the wrong option out of confusion or out of not knowing the answer.

To avoid being in this position, students are advised to become proficient in all the topics provided in the syllabus to the best of their ability. This reduces the chances of marking wrong answers & increases the chances of scoring maximum marks.

Students may draft a timetable such that all the topics from Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology are studied without fail. Learning and revision all the subjects is the first step to avoid picking wrong answers for more questions.

2. Leave Doubtful Questions Unattempted

Spending too much time on every question is the major drawback in competitive exams. To avoid negative marking in the NEET exam, students are advised to set a time limit to answer every question. This can be better practised while attempting the mock tests. Once the set threshold is crossed, students can choose to skip that question or come back to the question after all the 180 questions are gone through.

Spending way too much time on the question causes the students to miss out on many right answers that they may confront in the exam. Trying to pick any answer in an attempt to solve the paper quickly can also lead to marking the wrong answer and to avoid this, students may practice solving each question within a timeframe.

3. Practice as many Mock Tests as Possible

Mock tests determine how well a student can perform in the exam. While it does not directly imply the score that an individual may achieve, it determines how far the student has come along in the preparation journey.

Students may set a target while practising the mock test. The target should aim at minimizing the wrong answers so as to avoid the negative marking in the NEET final exam. Students can only become efficient if more mock tests are practised.

Also, practising the trick of answering in allotted timings reduces the chances of negative marking. While most students can opt for the right answers if time permits, the real challenge lies in choosing the right answer within the time constraint.

4. Avoid Answering at the Last Moment

Attempting the answers at the last moment increases the chances of choosing the wrong answers. To avoid this, students may choose not to answer any questions or do the guesswork at the last minute. Although most of the students choose to come back to the questions they might have left out in the first round of attempting the paper, it is advisable to mark the answer only if the candidate is most certain about the answer. Guesswork should be limited to only 2 or 3 questions as losing even one mark can cost a lag of thousands of ranks.

5. Go by the Method of Elimination

The smartest approach to picking the right answer is to follow the method of elimination. This narrows down your options to mark the right answer and increases your accuracy. While going through the process of elimination, make sure you are surely eliminating the wrong options to avoid negative marking.

Following the elimination method when you are really unsure about the question can be a risky step. Assure that you are confident about picking the right answer.

6. Minimise Guesswork as Much as Possible

Guesswork is the primary reason behind negative marks. Although most students assume they have picked the right answer after a lot of guesswork, it might turn out the other way around. The first step to avoiding the guesswork is to attain proficiency in the subject. Students who have the subject knowledge at their fingertips are confident while answering the questions & this minimises guesswork in a lot of areas.

Secondly, students should not mark the answers in a hurry. This leads to a lot of wrong attempts. Although the student may mark the right answers, making a lot of guesswork deducts the marks immensely which should be avoided.

7. Avoid Verbal Calculations

For subjects like Physics & Chemistry, it is important to have the formulas and concepts studied thoroughly along with efficiency in problem-solving & calculation. Calculating the numericals verbally consumes a lot of time and this can be instead utilized to answer other easy questions.

A separate note for subjects involving calculations can be prepared by the students so that learning problem-based concepts and solving the problems becomes easy.

8. Go Through Each Question Carefully

Sometimes, students may know the right answer accurately, but overlooking the question leads to unexpected errors. This is a reminder to read every question carefully before darkening the circle on the OMR sheet. While answering questions with speed is essential, accuracy is equally important which may otherwise lead to negative marks. Later, you do not want to regret overlooking a question & choosing the wrong answer for an easy question that might have fetched you good marks.

The practice of going through questions carefully comes from relentless practice and mock tests are a good way to improve your practice.

9. Presence of Mind is Crucial

Right from answering question 1, it is very important for the students to keep their state of mind present till the exam ends. The probability of missing out on the right answers may occur if there is no mind presence. Also, students may not be able to analyze the questions quickly and interpret what is being asked in the question if there is no presence of mind.

10. Do Not Stress Out

While entering the exam hall, students must ensure that they are calm and cool-headed. Stressing causes nothing but worry. It is essential to remember that students can attempt to only the best of their knowledge. Stressing further about anything only ruins the chances of missing out on easy questions.

The key to giving the best performance & avoid negative marking in NEET is to master all the subjects, practice sample tests, work on areas of improvement & finally avoid a lot of guesswork in the exam.
