** See my belief is that classroom studies(of both school and coaching) if properly taken care of contribute near about 80+% to your knowledge and rest is your self study. I also believe that for proper preparation one should and must perform well at both the levels – school as well as coaching. One shouldnot make an excuse of giving more attention to one of these two at any point of time (that is any test in coaching or any exams in school should not affect your preparation or performance level in the counterpart).
**In JEE, proper school studies contribute as high as upto 25% and coaching as high as upto 90%.
In Board, school studies account for 60-100% and coaching may help upto 60%. It totally depends on you how much you are able to extract the knowledge from your teachers.
MISTAKES COMMITED BY STUDENT
–Usually students fool around in the school saying that the teachers of coaching are far much better. they dont listen to the school teachers by giving either of the two totally rubbish excuses- first this topic has been done in the coaching classes so i know more than this teacher, and second, this topic will be done in the coaching classes after sometime so i will not be able to understand it now from this teacher and will cover it when it is done in coaching. You will realise that most of you are donig the same mistake. Make sure that you donot repeat this mistake from now onwards.
–One more silly and baseless thing that students do is the completion of coaching assignment in the school hours when the teacher is teaching in the class. Its fine that you are not getting time so you are utilising the time and is a good habit (that you should have ) but please donot do so whenever a teacher is teaching, it is a kind of disrespect and will seriously affect you and your results because the positive energy derived from the blessings and thoughts of the teachers for you help a lot. You maynot understand this point but it has a scientific proof as well. So take care from the next time.
–Next, students always keep an extra excuse with them for their poor performance in exams and tests. When asked about their performance, they first tell that they spoiled it because they had not studied and revised for it. And above this, they are proud of their achievement. They say that if they would have had studied i would have excelled. I dont understand why are they so careless and why do they consider lack of revision a good thing. You should realize that at any point of time you should be ready for any type of exam . I know this is difficult but atleast you should be 70/% prepared. Habit of studying at the 11th hour just before the exam is also very harmful (a modified view is also posted below) and hence, one should keep the last time only for review of some very important points. i will suggest you that whenever you are asked about your result or performance JUST TELL YOUR RESULT WITHOUT ANY EXCUSE even if you are asked the reason for your poor performance accept your fault by saying just that next time it will not happen. Do not make stories that there was some function or you went somewhere and you could not revise etc. This will make you FEEL GUILTY and you will try your level best not to repeat your mistake. If you give an excuse, you do not feel so and you do not try to improve yourself.
–Never give a test underprepared . Atleast never miss a test in both school and coaching.
–Go to coaching (atleast 90%+) . donot think that i have given more emphasis to coaching. Actually coaching classes usually deliver more content on one day hence youneed to be somewhat more regular there.
–Go to school regular (atleast 80%) if the teachers of school teach well (and trust me they do teach very well if you see them with a positive attitude and just try to make out the teachers’ plus points and try to neglect their minus points).Do not underestimate your teachers, just think that the person who is standing before you does know more than you about the topic/subject and please respect him/her. Trust me there will be always atleast one new point or aspect that you will learn from each lecture you attend irrespective of the person who delivers it. You should listen with full concentration when the teachers teach (of both school and coaching).
MAKING A CHOICE –
** Avoid taking an advice/view from your classmates about school and coaching. By saying so, I mean that you should consult only your seniors who have qualified JEE and their parents. And do consult more than one of them and then decide.
Reasons are discussed below.
–Now a days, people do deviate you by telling you that some particular coaching donot give time to students for self study. If you here about any of such coaching, believe me it would be the best coaching in your neighbourhood. The reasons are
__ First, people including parents generally turn the positive points of a good coaching to negative under the influence of the masses. Masses here means a large part of the students preparing for JEE. Actually most of the students try to avoid hard work and appreciate those coachings which allows them to have fun and enjoy everything other than studies. So be careful from such people. They will tell you that in that coaching you will not get time for self studies. The fact is that 99% of these students never do self study in 11th and 12th.
___Second, you will utilise your time to the maximum when you join such a coaching. Actually, you donot get much time to waste it in the so called fun activities. On top of that, you are learning your subjects with better understanding in very less time. Eg. when you take a topic for self study without knowing anything about it, say you master the topic in 5 hours from a book and that too with about 3-4 hours of time wastage in between . But when a teacher teaches it, you will master it in a much better way from many good books within one hour with no wastage of time and rest of the time (8 hours) you can revise, extend your understanding by practicing a lot.
___Third, due to regular coaching you are always in touch with studies and will always have a higher level of preparation as compared to the masses .
–Try to join a coaching with a tight schedule and discipline. It should have a lot of interaction hours. Eg. Usual teaching hours in Kota is about 13 hours a week and classroom course is of 40 weeks . This schedule is perfect for the born intelligents and super genius people. But, if you are an average student or a low level student a coaching (such as the one in which I studied) which has a schedule of 14 hours a day on holidays and summers and sundays and conducts around 150 JEE pattern tests followed by aruond 6 hours discussion with faculty (in comparison to 10 tests by a coaching in kota and no discussion) along with innumerable daily tests and assignments will prove to be the best to bring you at par to the very intelligent people and even cross them.
** DO NOT JOIN A DUMMY SCHOOL.
–Join such a school which gives more emphasis on academics in 11th and 12th , has good faculty, which has good labs and where practicals are properly conducted. I was lucky enough to get such a school Sagar Public School in bhopal where the faculty was very nice and was friendly. The plus point was both my school and coaching never criticised any coaching or school respectively. This really has become rare now a days.
