India-UK 2nd Financial Markets Dialogue held in London

  • In order to enhance financial cooperation, India and the U.K. held their second meeting of the India-UK Financial Markets Dialogue (FMD) in London on 19 April. Both countries welcomed holding the first in-person financial dialogue since 2017.
  • Dialogue is part of financial cooperation between India and the U.K., a key element of the 2030 Roadmap adopted in 2021.

The Dialogue focused on six themes:

(1) Banking

(2) Payments and Cryptoassets

(3) Insurance and reinsurance

(4) Capital Markets

(5) Asset Management

(6) Sustainable Finance

India’s Fintech sector in other countries:

  • Leveraging India Stack and taking it global 
  • Mapping Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) to India Stack and promoting interoperability between existing payment services 
  • Create a centralised database to harmonise bank account details across banks and introduce seamless bank switching services
  • Enhance the FinTech ecosystem with cybersecurity and data protection regimes

Cabinet Nod to Cinematograph (Amendment) Bill 2023

  • The Union Cabinet recently approved the Cinematograph (Amendment) Bill 2023, which has provisions to curb the transmission of pirated film content on the internet.
  • It has provisions to curb the transmission of pirated film content on the internet. 
  • It has provisions to classify films based on age group instead of the current practice of ‘U’, ‘A’, and ‘UA’. 
  • “U” is for unrestricted public exhibition, “A” is restricted to the adult audience, “UA” is for unrestricted public exhibition subject to parental guidance for children below the age of 12, and “S” is for special category audiences such as doctors and scientists. 
  • It seeks to add new classifications—”UA-7+”, “UA-13+”, and “UA-16+” in place for 12 years.

MAHARISHI Initiative for Millets and Ancient Grains

  • The G20 Meeting of Agricultural Chief Scientists (MACS) is critical in supporting collaborative action to implement science-based solutions for creating sustainable, resilient, and lucrative agri-food systems.
  • It provides an excellent forum for discussion, deliberation, and the exchange of knowledge, science, and technologies for food and nutrition security, as well as for boosting G20 collaboration.

Details: 

  • Participants of the G20 Meeting of Agriculture Chief Scientists on “Sustainable Agriculture and Food System for Healthy People and Planet” unanimously supported the launch of MAHARISHI. 
  • Its secretariat will be housed at the Indian Institute of Millets Research (IIMR), Hyderabad, with technical support from the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), One CGIAR Centres and other International organisations. 
  • It will focus on Research and Awareness about agro-biodiversity, food security, and nutrition, aligning with the International Year of Millets 2023. 
  • Millets are known as “Nutri-cereals” or superfoods, mainly grown on marginal land in dry areas of temperate, subtropical and tropical regions.

Theme and priority areas:

  • The theme of the 12th MACS meeting, held under India’s presidency, is Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems for Healthy People and Planet.
  • There are four priority areas in this theme: 
    • First, food security and nutrition: the role of frontiers in science and technology
    • Second, building resilience and sustainable agriculture through climate-resilient agriculture and One Health approaches
    • Third, digitalisation for agricultural transformation
    • Finally, public-private partnerships for research and development

Asha Bhosle to be honoured with Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Puraskar

  • Legendary singer Asha Bhosle will be felicitated with the Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Award.
  • The family and the trust instituted the award in memory of Lata Mangeshkar, who died on 6 February 2022 following multiple organ failures.
  • Bhosle, the younger sister of Lata Mangeshkar, will receive the recognition on 24 April, the Memorial Day of their father and theatre-music veteran Deenanath Mangeshkar.
  • This award, known as the Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Puraskar, is given annually to an individual who has made a path-breaking contribution towards the nation, its people and society.

Other Award Winners:

  • Veteran ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas will be honoured with the Master Deenanath Mangeshkar Award for his contribution to Indian music.
  • Gauri Theaters of Prashant Damle Fan Foundation will be awarded the Best Drama of the Year for their play “Niyam Va Ati Lagoo”.
  • Sadguru Seva Sangh Trust will be honoured for its social service.
  • Granthali Prakashan will receive the Vag Vilasini Award for his contribution to literature.

Transgender Monika Das named state icon for election in Bihar

  • Thirty-year-old Monica Das has scripted history by becoming the country’s first transgender banker.

Maha Govt has announced a 4% reservation for Divyang employees in promotions

  • Maharashtra Government has announced a 4% reservation for Divyang employees in promotions. 
  • The state cabinet has decided that this reservation will apply to those cadres in which the proportion of recruitment through direct service is not more than 75 per cent.
  • This decision is on the lines of the similar one taken by the Central government. 
  • The Cabinet also decided that women belonging to the Open and the backward categories need not produce the non-creamy layer certificate for posts reserved for them under the Open category.
  • In December 2022, Maharashtra became the first state in the country to set up a Divyang department for the welfare of differently-abled people.

Prestigious Santokbaa Humanitarian Award conferred to innovator Sonam Wangchuk.

  • Sonam Wangchuk has been awarded the prestigious Santokbaa Humanitarian Award for his contributions to society.
  • He is best known for his work on the Ice Stupa project, which aims to address water scarcity in the Himalayas.
  • He is an engineer, innovator, educationist and sustainable development reformist and Founder-Director of the Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh.
  • The Santokbaa Humanitarian Award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to society in the areas of education, healthcare, and social welfare.
  • The award, which carries a cash prize of ₹1 crore, has been instituted in memory of SRK and SRKKF’s Founder Chairman Govind Dholakia’s mother, the Late Santokbaa Dholakia.
  • The previous award recipients include Ratan Tata, Kailash Satyarthi, A.S. Kiran Kumar and Sudha Murty.

Argentina to replace Indonesia as FIFA Under-20 World Cup host

  • Argentina will host the under-20 soccer World Cup following the decision to strip Indonesia of the right to stage the tournament.
  • FIFA announced the decision to remove Indonesia as host on March 29 after the country’s FA cancelled the draw to be held in Bali as its governor refused to host Israel’s team.
  • The Argentine FA formally submitted its bid to host the May 20-June 11 tournament one day later at the South American Football Confederation Congress.
  • World champions Argentina have won the most Under-20 World Cups, with six in total.
  • Argentina hosted the under-20 World Cup in 2001 when they won the fourth of their record six titles.
  • They are also seeking to jointly host the World Cup finals in 2030 with Uruguay, Chile and Paraguay.

Exercise Orion

  • Exercise Orion, a bilateral military drill between the Indian Air Force and the French Air and Space Force (FASF), started at the Mont-de-Marsan airbase in France.
  • Orion is reportedly the largest ever multinational exercise being carried out by the French defence forces, which have involved their Army, Navy and Air Force along with their allies, the US and the UK.
  • The IAF Contingent comprising four Rafale, two C-17, two ll-78 aircraft, and 165 air warriors, participated in the exercise.
  • This would be the first overseas exercise for the IAF’s Rafale aircraft.

SIDBI Launches ‘Mission 50K-EV4ECO’ 

  • Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) has announced the launch of a pilot scheme called ‘Mission 50K-EV4ECO’ aimed at strengthening the electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem.
  • ‘Mission 50K-EV4ECO’ aims to promote EV adoption and strengthen associated infrastructure in the country.
  • The pilot scheme is a precursor to the EVOLVE scheme by SIDBI-World Bank.

SpaceX Starship Rocket Exploded

  • SpaceX CEO Elon Musk tweeted today that the Starship spacecraft launched and then exploded within a few minutes.
  • He greeted the company by saying that learning came after failure. He took this flight explosion positively. 
  • Elon further announced that the next test would happen after a few months.
