Google launches ‘India Ki Udaan project’
Capturing the milestones that India has achieved in its journey of 75 years since Independence, software giant Google recently unveiled a vibrant online project drawing from rich archives and featuring artistic illustrations to tell the story of the country.
What is India ki Udaan?
Named ‘India ki Udaan’, the project executed by Google Arts & Culture celebrates the country’s achievements and is “themed on the unwavering and undying spirit of India over these past 75 years”.
It will show informative online content that showcases the contributions of Indians and the evolution of India since 1947 to support the Government’s year-long ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ program.
Doodle4Google contest for 2022
It also announced that its popular Doodle4Google contest for 2022, themed on ‘In the next 25 years, my India will …’, is now open for entries to students of classes 1-10.
The winner of this year’s Doodle4Google will see their artwork on the Google homepage in India on November 14 and win a ₹5,00,000 college scholarship, a ₹2,00,000 technology package for their school/non-profit organisation.
In its 10th year in India, Google Arts & Culture has showcased India’s rich culture in many ways. Working with over 100 partners in India, it has brought India’s cultural heritage to people all around the world.

Ex Vajra Prahar 2022
The 13th Edition of the Indo-US Joint Special Forces exercises “Ex Vajra Prahar 2022” commenced at the Special Forces Training School (SFTS), Bakloh (HP) recently.
About the forces of Both sides:
The US contingent is represented by personnel from the 1st Special Forces Group (SFG), and Special Tactics Squadron (STS) of US Special Forces and the Indian Army contingent is formed by drawing Special Forces personnel under the aegis of SFTS.
What is Ex Vajra Prahar?
The Vajra Prahar series of joint exercises aims to share best practices and experiences in joint mission planning and operational tactics and improve inter-operability between the Special Forces of both Nations.
This annual exercise is hosted alternatively between India and the United States. The 12th edition was conducted at Joint Base Lewis Mcchord, Washington (USA), in October 2021.
About the Exercise
During the course of the next 21 days, teams of both armies would jointly train, plan and execute a series of Special Operations, Counter Terrorist Operations, and Airborne operations in simulated conventional and unconventional scenarios in mountainous terrain.
This joint exercise is a significant step in strengthening the traditional bond of friendship between the special forces of both Nations as well as improving bilateral defence cooperation between India and the USA.

Indian Army launches “HIM- DRONE-A-THON”
The Indian Army, in collaboration with the Drone Federation of India, has launched the ‘Him Drone-a-Thon’ programme, recently.
This initiative, in line with Atmanirbharta in defence manufacturing, is aimed to catalyse and provide focused opportunities to the Indian drone ecosystem to develop path-breaking drone capabilities for meeting the requirements of frontline troops.
What is the ‘Him Drone-a-thon’ programme?
The ‘Him Drone-a-thon’ programme is panning across India and sustaining connections between all stakeholders, including industry, academia, software developers and drone product manufacturers.
It will be conducted in stages with quantifiable parameters (like altitude, weight, range, endurance etc.) being progressively enhanced based on demonstrated capabilities.
The Indian Army’s support of the indigenous drone ecosystem is based on the principle that ‘good available indigenously’ is better than the ‘best available globally.
However, gradual enhancement in technology demanded by defence forces is likely to incentivise the manufacture of better and more capable drone products.

The 12th edition of DefExpo – India’s flagship exhibition on Land, Naval and Homeland Security systems – will be held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, between October 18-22, 2022.
About the Event
The five-day event will witness three business days followed by two public days.
DefExpo 2022 will be held in a three-venue format across an area of 01+ lakh square metres at Helipad Exhibition Centre, inaugural event and seminars at Mahatma Mandir Convention and Exhibition Centre, and a live demo at Sabarmati River Front.
The exhibition is being planned with events such as Bandhan for forging partnerships between companies, seminars, and webinars showcasing start-ups/MSMEs, including cutting-edge technology solutions for the future battlefield.

Efforts made by the Defence Ministry to promote Defence Manufacturing
The Ministry of Defence has introduced numerous policy reforms in recent years, such as simplifying the industrial licensing process.
Allowing 74% Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) through automatic route; release of a positive list of items to be procured only from Indian manufacturers.
The reforms in defence manufacturing are attracting greater interest from Indian Defence manufacturers, and it is therefore anticipated that DefExpo-2022 would attract active participation from Indian companies.

Commonwealth Games 2022
India finished 4th on the podium at the Commonwealth Games 2022 with an overall medal tally of 61, including 22 Gold, 16 Silver, and 23 Bronze.
The Birmingham Games is India’s fourth-best performance at the CWG in terms of Gold medals won tied with the 2006 Manchester Games.
India’s best-ever showing at the Commonwealth Games came at home in 2010 when the Asian giants won 101 medals, including 38 Gold.
In terms of overall medals won, Birmingham 2022 is 5th best showing after New Delhi (101), Manchester 2002 (69), Gold Coast 2018 (66), and Glasgow 2014 (64).

In Birmingham, India finished behind Australia 178 (67 Gold), England 176 (57 Gold), and Canada 92 (26 Gold).
Wrestlers contributed the most to the medal tally of India, with all 12 of them returning home with medals.
Weightlifters won 10 medals, including 3 Gold medals, while table tennis stars won 7 medals, including 4 Gold.
Despite the absence of shooting and archery, India shone in athletics, Lawn Bowls, and Para Powerlifting, apart from sports like wrestling, weightlifting, boxing, and badminton, where India has traditionally done well.
Sharath Kamal, the 40-year-old table tennis star, emerged as the most successful Indian athlete at Commonwealth Games 2022 with 4 medals, including 3 Gold.

The sixth award was conferred by Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh, which celebrated the ‘dPal rNgam Duston’ with great fervour on the occasion of its foundation day at Sindhu Ghat.

The 87-year-old spiritual leader, who has been on a visit to the Union Territory since July 15, appreciated the gesture and stressed maintaining communal harmony in the region.

First woman Director General in CSIR
The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has, for the first time in its 80-year-old history, appointed a woman Director-General.
About N. Kalaiselvi
N. Kalaiselvi, currently, Director of the CSIR-Central Electro Chemical Research Institute (CSIR-CECRI), Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu, will now lead the network of 38 laboratories and nearly 4,500 scientists and has been appointed for two years, according to a note from the Appointments Committee of the Union Cabinet.
Achievements of N. Kalaiselvi
Dr Kalaiselvi’s research work spans over 25 years and is focused on electrochemical power systems and developing electrode materials, custom-design synthesis methods, optimising reaction parameters and electrochemical evaluation of in-house prepared electrode materials for making energy storage devices.
Her research interests include lithium and beyond lithium batteries, supercapacitors and waste-to-wealth driven electrodes and electrolytes for energy storage and electro-catalytic applications.
A long journey
From Ambasamudram village in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu to heading the CSIR as its first woman Director-General, it has been a long journey for Dr Kalaiselvi.
Having studied in her native district in a Tamil medium school, she had gone on to pursue her Ph. D degree from Annamalai University in Chidambaram.
In February 2019, Dr Kalaiselvi was appointed Director of the Karaikudi-based Central Electro Chemical Research Institute (CECRI).
This is the first time a scientist from the CECRI has been appointed Director-General of the CSIR.

The innovative Market Linkage scheme- PARVAZ possesses tremendous potential for uplifting the economic conditions of the farmers across the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
About the Scheme
The Government launched the scheme to create market linkage support for the shipment of Agriculture and Horticulture perishables harvested in Jammu and Kashmir through Air Cargo.
Under the scheme, a 25 per cent subsidy on freight charges is given for carrying perishable fruits harvested in Jammu and Kashmir for shipment through Air Cargo. The subsidy is provided to farmers through DBT mode.
Jammu & Kashmir Horticultural Produce Marketing and Processing Corporation (JKHPMC), the implementing agency of the scheme, is regularly creating awareness among the farmers about the significance of this scheme so that an ample number of them can take benefit from it.
This scheme tends to benefit the farmers by doubling their income, thereby ensuring their economic and social welfare. The scheme will get the price of their produce directly in their bank account with no intermediary in between.
