EYFS full form is the Early Years Foundation Stage Programme. In Hindi, EYFS full form is प्रारंभिक वर्षों की नींव चरण कार्यक्रम. EYFS sets the care, development, welfare, safety, and learning standards for children from birth up to 5 years of age. EYFS is relevant only for schools and Ofsted registered early-year providers in England. They include school reception classes, nurseries, preschools, playschemes, and childminders.

EYFS is a structured approach to providing childcare to children and helping them develop their learning through constant assessment. It helps to deliver quality education and learning experience. It also tranquilises parents by discussing the action plan for the foundational learning years affected by their choices.

EYFS Framework

EYFS is a statutory framework. It was defined in Section 39 of the Childcare Act of 2006. These describe the requirements that every childminder must meet. A childminder refers to an individual who takes care and provides nourishment and basic education to the child in absence of their parents. The current framework is divided into three parts.

  1. Learning and Development Requirements: It defines the learning aspect of the child and their development in these settings. They have repercussions on the activities that are offered.
  2. Assessment Requirements: The method with which the child is assessed. It provides feedback to the caregiver.
  3. Safeguarding and Welfare Requirements: It narrates how the child must be safeguarded and pushes the agenda for their welfare.

EYFS Curriculum

The EYFS curriculum was introduced in 2008. The EYFS curriculum intends to provide the following.

  1. Quality education and learning consistency in the early years.
  2. Secure foundation tailored to the needs of the varying age groups of children.
  3. Partnership between parents/caregivers and practitioners/educators.
  4. Equal opportunities for children irrespective of their backgrounds.

Effective Teaching

Effective teaching and learning within EYFS allows the practitioners to warrant that children are picking up prime and specific areas of learning. Effective teaching has the following characteristics.

Learning and Development Requirements

EYFS framework sets the domains of what and how the child will learn. The child is taught through games and activities. It will assist them in learning new skills and knowledge and subsequently applying them. Educators do not usually teach the children in classrooms. Instead, they morph to the requirements of the children. These settings where the learning is boosted are known as an early year or learning to set.

Learning Areas

During those, they build up the seven areas of learning. They are divided into two specific and prime areas of learning

Prime Areas

The following are considered prime areas of learning because the child can build a secure foundation with these learning aspects.

  1. Emotional, personal, and social development: It aids the child to inculcate positive affirmations in themselves and build positive relationships. It assists children in managing their feelings and emotions and appropriately interacting in different social situations.
  2. Language and communication: It puts the children in a rich language setting. They are taught to listen, interact, and confidently express themselves in all environments.
  3. Physical development: It aims at building strength, coordination, movement, motor skills, and control. They are taught the necessity of healthy food and physical activities.

Specific Areas

The following are considered specific areas of learning as it narrows the focus to the daily skills needed.

  1. Art and design: It assists the child in working with a wide array of media and material for a clearer expression through activities such as arts, dance, music, role-play, and more.
  2. Literacy and Information and Communications Technologies (ICT): It helps the child form connection between sounds and letters. It encourages reading and writing a wide range of materials to incite interest. 
  3. Mathematics and numeracy: It focuses on improving the calculation and counting skills of the child. It helps them identify shapes and symbols and measure various variables.
  4. World understanding and knowledge: It incites the children to explore their physical spaces and the real-world cultures and communities to learn about the principles and working.

Principles of EYFS

EYFS work on four main principles. They have been listed in the Statutory Framework for the early year’s foundation stages (New EYFS 2021). These principles are listed below

  1. Each child is unique, confident, resilient, self-assured, and capable of learning.
  2. Positive relationships ensure a child’s strength and independence.
  3. Children have a strong relationship with their caregivers. Thus, an enabling environment assists them in growing and developing.
  4. All children learn and grow at different paces.

Assessment Requirements

Once the child is 2-3 years old, they are deemed fit for progress review. A health visitor or early year practitioner will conduct the assessment. Once the child is five years old, the teacher will evaluate them at the end of the school year. Their assessment, also known as the EYFS profile, is based on classroom observations of the teachers and the staff. They must pass all the learning goals as set by the early year’s framework to transition to Year 1.

The educator must gauge their progress. They must identify how the child expresses themselves and their interest areas and, therefore, the activities which will assist them in learning. It will assist them in mapping the children’s comparative and expected progress charts. For holistic information, it is usually recommended to the parents submit their observations to the teacher.

Exemptions

Parents can request an exemption for their child if it conflicts with their religious or philosophical beliefs. The exemption is granted by the early year’s provider and will exempt the child from a specific area of learning for 12 months. After 12 months, the parents need to apply for the exemption again. The exemptions from the Learning and Development requirements are provided for the following.

  • Settings and circumstances under Section 46(1).
  • Individual children under Section 46(2).

Safeguarding and Welfare Requirements

The caregiver must ensure that the child is protected and taken care of. The following are ten domains of safeguarding and welfare that have been ruled imperative.

  1. Child protection: Applying appropriate and accurate safeguarding practices to eradicate the issues faced by the child.
  2. Health: Ensuring health, nutrition, medical attention, and precautions against illnesses or injuries.
  3. Information and records: Maintain information about the child and share records with the parents and professionals whenever necessary.
  4. Key person: Assigning a middleman between the child and the parents so that the need of the children are communicated.
  5. Managing behaviour: Implementing efficient procedures to curb and understand undesirable behaviour.
  6. Safety and suitability of premises, environment, and equipment: Ensuring the child’s living, playing, and working spaces are suitable and safe for their age and skills.
  7. Special Educational Needs (SEN): Managing provisions for a child with SEN or other disadvantages as guided by the SEN Code of Practice.
  8. Staff-child ratio: Confirming that the staff-children ratio adequately addresses the child’s needs.
  9. Staff qualifications, training, support and skills: Verifying that the staff has essential knowledge and qualifications to successfully understand their significance and achieve their task.
  10. Suitable people: Check the qualifications and suitability of individuals who contact the child regularly.

EYFS Policy and Reforms

Policies guide the parents and staff towards the aim and how to achieve the objectives. It is constantly reformed, with the current iteration published in March 2021 and enforced on 1 September 2021. The Department of Education has made a few subtle changes to enhance the framework. These alterations are listed below.

  2. Updated research, introduction, and ‘Effective Teaching and Learning’ section.
