GATE 2023: Application Process and Exam Dates Released

GATE 2023: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur will conduct the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering 2023 exam on February 4, 5, 11, and 12, 2023. As per the latest announcement, the online registration process will begin in the first week of September 2022. Moreover, IIT Kanpur has announced the addition of two new paper combinations and 23 new exam centres. Candidates preparing for the exam must register on the official GATE website and then apply for the exam.

GATE Application Process 2023

Indian Institute of Technology has released the GATE application form online. The candidates can fill the application form from September 2022. The candidates are advised to fill the registration form before the closing date. The candidates need to submit the application form in online mode only. The GATE registration process is to be carried out through the GOAPS (GATE Online Application Processing System). In the application form, the candidate needs to fill in their name, contact number, valid email ID etc. The applicants will also have to upload the required documents such as photographs, signatures and certificates. After that, make the final submission by paying the application form fee.

GATE Exam Pattern 2022

IIT Knapur has released the GATE Exam Pattern for the 2023 session along with the information brochure. The candidates can check the GATE Exam Pattern to know what questions will be asked in the exam, exam duration, several questions, marking schemes and much more. For all papers of the GATE 2023 exam, there will be a total of 65 questions with 100 marks, out of which there will be 10 questions with 15 marks as in GA (General Aptitude). 

For the specific paper codes (AE, AG, BT, CH, CE, CS, EC, EE, IN, ME, MT, MN, PI, TF and XE), the GA and Maths will carry around 28% of the total marks. According to the Exam Pattern, the GA section will carry 15% of the total marks, while 72% belong to the subject paper. While for the paper codes – AR, CY, EY, GG, MA, PH, XH, XL, the GA section will carry 15%, and the remaining 85% of the total marks will be from the subject paper.

GATE Exam Syllabus 2022

IIT Kanpur will release the GATE 2023 Syllabus for all subjects on the official website. With the help of the GATE Syllabus, the candidates can find out the chapters/topics that require more time and effort to prepare for GATE 2023. GATE exam syllabus helps students in proper planning for the preparation for exams. Candidates must check the GATE 2023 syllabus and exam pattern from here. Having a clear understanding of the syllabus for exams is a must for every candidate.

GATE Papers 2023

The number of papers that IIT Kanpur will conduct is yet to be announced. However, candidates can check the list of subjects that IIT Kanpur conducted for GATE 2023. A candidate is allowed to appear in any one or up to two papers of the examination. One important note that candidates need to keep in mind is that the combination of TWO papers in which a candidate can appear MUST be from the pre-defined list given by the exam conducting authority.

GATE 2023 Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility criteria are the prerequisite to apply for an examination. Meeting the eligibility criteria is the first step towards online registration. The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur will released the eligibility criteria for GATE 2023 applicants soon. Candidates need to fulfil the GATE eligibility criteria to proceed with the GATE registration process.

Nationality – Candidates of any nationality can apply for GATE 2023, subject to the other eligibility conditions for the postgraduate engineering exam. This means both Indian and international students can apply for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering.

Age Criteria – Candidates, irrespective of their age, can register and apply for GATE 2023 as there is no age limit to appear for the postgraduate engineering exam.

Educational Qualification – Candidates in the third or the higher years of undergraduate degree programmes can apply for GATE 2023. Further, those who already have a graduation degree in Engineering / Technology / Architecture / Science / Commerce / Arts. The below table provides a brief on the qualifying degree examination with the passing year.

GATE 2023 Application Form Correction

IIT Kanpur is going to open the GATE 2023 application form correction facility for the candidates. The applicants who want to make any change in their application form can do it in a specified period of time. It gives a chance to the candidates to edit or correct any information in the GATE 2023 application form. Hence, it is important for the candidates to utilize this chance to edit their application form. The correction link will be activated soon on the official website. The direct link to make corrections will be updated here too. The candidates are advised to correct those data before the closing date of the correction window.

However, the candidates can make corrections in the category, exam paper and exam centres only. To make such corrections the candidates need to pay the extra amount of fees as the charges. The exam conducting authority will not accept any corrections or changes after the closing date. The official details regarding the application form correction will be announced soon on the official website. Till then, it is advisable for the candidates to fill the form without any mistakes.

GATE 2023 Mock Test

IIT Kanpur will soon release the GATE 2023 Mock Test on its official website, i.e. The mock test is like dummy or practice tests of the actual GATE question paper. A mock test is a simulation of a real exam. GATE Mock Test will help students to do better preparation for the exam. This Online Mock Test 2023 will help the candidates get familiar with the GATE Exam Pattern and the type and format of the actual exam paper. The exam conducting authority will release the practical test for various subjects separately. The online practice test for the exam will be 3 hours long, and it will have the same format as the actual exam.

The candidates who want to brush up on their performance should always practice the mock test multiple times. It is always a good approach to solve the GATE Mock Test before going for the actual exam. It will prepare you to tackle different questions in an actual exam time-based environment.

GATE 2023 Question Papers

The pattern of Questions – 

GATE 2023 contain questions of three different type of papers – 

  1. MCQ (Multiple Choice Questions) – It carries 1 or 2 marks each, in all the papers and sections. These are objective type questions which will have choices of 4, out of which only one is correct.
  • Negative Marking for wrong answers.
  • For 1 mark MCQ, 1/3 mark will be deducted for wrong answers, while for 2 mark question, 2/3 mark will be deducted.
  1. MSQ (Multiple Select Questions) – It carries 1 or 2 marks each in all the papers and sections. There will be no negative marking for a wrong answer in MSQ Types.
  2. NAT (Numerical Answer Type) – It usually carries 1 or 2 marks each in most of the papers and sections. For such types of questions, the answer is usually a real number, which needs to be filled by the candidate using a virtual calculator.

Marks Distribution

There will be 65 questions carrying 100 marks, out of which 10 questions carrying 15 marks will be GA, and the rest will be from the subject.

  1. For paper code AE,AG,BM,BT,CE,CH,CS,EC,EE,ES,GE,IN,ME,MN,MT,NM,PE,PI,TF & XE – Engineering Mathematics will carry around 15% of the total marks and the remaining around 70% of the total marks belonging to subject.
  2. For the paper code AR,CY,EY,GG,MA,PH,ST,XH and XL, the aptitude section will have 15% of the total marks while 85% of the total marks is devoted to the subject.

Design of Questions – 

  1. Recall – These are based on facts, formulae, principle or laws in the discipline of the paper. The candidates are expected to get answers either from their memory of the subject or at most from one line computation.
  2. Comprehension – Such kinds of questions will be helpful to evaluate the candidate’s understanding of the basic concepts of his field. 
  3. Application – In this section, it is expected that candidates should apply their knowledge or use some logical reasoning.
  4. Analysis and Synthesis – Synthesis questions require the candidate to compare more than two pieces of info.

A candidate is allowed to appear in any one or up to two papers of the examination. However, note that the combination of TWO papers in which a candidate can appear MUST be from the pre-defined list below. GATE Question Paper links will be updated here soon.

GATE 2023 Admit Card

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpurwill release the GATE 2023 admit card after the completion of the application process. The admit card link will be released on the official website in the online mode only. The candidates need to make sure they download the GATE hall ticket before the closing date. Only those candidates will be able to download the hall ticket, who have completed their registration form. The candidates are advised to come to the exam hall with the hall ticket along with one identity proof. To download the GATE admit card, the candidates need to use their login credentials. It is mandatory to download the hall ticket and keep it safe until the admission process is over. Without bringing the GATE Admit Card, no candidates will be allowed to enter the examination centre.

GATE Exam Centres 2023

IIT Kanpur will release the GATE Exam centres list along with the GATE Information Brochure. A candidate can choose any 3 cities where they want to appear for the exam. Candidates can check the GATE 2023 exam centres to get an idea of where the GATE exams are usually held. There were 8 zones for the GATE 2023 Exam. GATE Answer Key 2023

IIT Kanpur will release the answer key for the GATE 2023 exam on their official website. The provisional answer key will be released first. It releases within a week after the exam ends. As per the GATE schedule, if the candidates want to raise any objection against the GATE answer key, they can raise it within the allotted time interval. IIT Kanpur will release the answer key for all the branches or papers. The exam will be conducted on February 4, 5, 11, and 12, 2022. The applicants need to keep check the official website to find the respective link of the question papers and their answer keys. Usually, they release the answer key in PDF format only. To raise the objection against the GATE answer key, the candidates need to pay the amount of 500/- as charge per objection.

GATE Response Sheet 2023

GATE Response sheet 2023 comprises the responses filed by the test-takers in their paper. The candidates can be able to predict their probable score by using their official GATE Answer key. Those candidates who will appear for the GATE 2023 Exam should download the GATE Response Sheet for their future reference. IIT Kanpur will release the response sheet for GATE 2023 on their official website. The candidates will have to use their login credentials on the GOAPS portal to download the response sheet.

GATE Exam Result 2023

Indian Institute of Technology will release result soon after the completion of the exam on their official website. The result will be declared online. The candidates who clears the exam successfully can only download the scorecard from the website. The GATE scorecard will be issued to those candidates who will pass the exam. This scorecard will be valid for up to 3 years. The candidates are advised to keep safe their GATE hall ticket with them. To download the scorecard, the candidates need to use their login credentials which were created at the time of registration. These same login credentials will be used to check the GATE Result as well as the scorecard. This exam score will help the candidates to get a chance to be recruited in PSUs also.

GATE Scorecard 2023

The qualified candidates will be able to download the GATE 2023 Scorecard by login in through GOAPS. The GATE Scorecard will contain the details like obtained marks, AIR, candidate’s details and normalized score. Only those candidates who have secured equal or more than the cutoff marks of the GATE exam will be declared as qualified candidates. Only such candidates will get the GATE 2023 Scorecard. These candidates can apply for further admission and recruitment processes. The candidates are advised to keep the GATE Scorecard for future purposes. The validity of the GATE 2023 scorecard is three years for MTech admissions. However, this validity may not apply to the PSU jobs recruitment.

Use of GATE Scorecard 2023 In Employment

  • Clearing GATE will help you to gain employment in Public Sector Undertaking aka PSUs.
  • Various PSUs make recruitment through valid GATE scores.
  • Although the exam is conducted for getting admission in Masters or Doctoral programmes in Technology, Engineering or Architecture with multiple Science streams.
  • These PSUs will declare their own cutoff marks. After that, they will conduct GD and PI rounds for final selection. Some PSUs prefer to take their own entrance test also for such qualified candidates.

The candidate who will secure the highest marks in the Examination will be considered for the Topper of GATE. From here, the candidates will check the marks and topper list for all 29 subjects of GATE. GATE Cut-off 2023

IIT Kanpur will release the GATE Cut-off on the official website. The candidates can check the cutoff for GATE 2023 as per subject. GATE Qualifying Cut-off –  The minimum marks required by the test takers to qualify for the GATE Examination. It will be different for all the 29 subjects of GATE. GATE Cut-off 2023 will vary as per the category of the student. It will be released by the institute along with GATE Result 2023.

How to Prepare for the GATE Exam 2023?

To prepare for the GATE exam, the candidates must read the complete syllabus for the 2023 session. Although the category of students has been divided into three sections first those who have just started the GATE preparation, second who have not begun the GATE Preparation and planning to start, and third one is those who have almost completed the GATE 2023 Syllabus or are about to end. Preparation strategy varies from one category to another.

Preparation Strategy for those who have just started studying for GATE Exam – 

  1. Pick up the important topics of the GATE Syllabus based on the weightage.
  2. It helps you cover the maximum number of important topics within a minimum time.
  3. The candidates who have just started preparing for the exam should aim to cover at least 60-70% syllabus.
  4. Solve at least 5 or 6 GATE Mock Tests before the final exam.

Preparation Strategy for those who have not started studying yet for GATE – 

  1. First read the exam pattern and syllabus carefully.
  2. Make notes of the weightage and important topics.
  3. Make a timetable that covers at least 50% of important topics of the GATE Syllabus.
  4. Try to solve previous year questions and analyse the answers.

Preparation Strategy for those who have covered at least half GATE Syllabus

  1. Those who have already covered half of the syllabus need to focus on revision more.
  2. Make a time table to cover more revision for your weaker sections.
  3. Solve at least last 10 years GATE Question Papers.
  4. Daily give one or two mock tests and analyse the pattern, type of questions, weightages and many things.

GATE Counselling 2023

The candidates who qualify for the exam will have to apply for Common Offer Acceptance Portal (COAP) for IIT Mtech admission and Centralised Counselling Mtech/MDes for NIT admission. The test givers will have to apply separately for CCMT and COAP counselling to get access. For IITs, the candidates will have to use them for individual institutes. Also, private and state universities conduct their counselling based on exam scores. Before allotment of seats, the institutes may conduct further written tests/interviews. The final seat allotment will be based on the candidate’s GATE 2023 Result, resulting in further written test/interview and verification of documents. The admission will be completed after the payment of the fee has been done. Only candidates who have passed the examination successfully can participate in GATE Counselling.


COAP is a common portal where IITs upload their admission to the GATE 2023 qualified candidates. The candidates must accept the admission offer through this portal also. Also, COAP is an important platform where PSUs upload their job offers for qualified students. The candidates must apply separately to the participating institutes. COAP acts as the common platform used by the institutes to upload their offers.

Candidates can make sure that GATE COAP is the application platform for getting admission into MTech programmes. Hence, they have to apply separately for the colleges. The institutes propose their offers in the specified window time. The portal is then made open for the interested aspirants to select the admission/job of their choice. The selection of candidates is as per the guidelines of the respective PSUs and Institutes.

PSU Recruitment through GATE 2023

PSU is the Public Sector Undertaking which is the government-owned companies or corporations. They usually offer employment based on GATE Exam Scores. The recruitment details for various posts inside PSU will be released separately for each one of them. Usually, most of the application process for PSU recruitment through GATE 2023 scores starts with the release of the Hall Ticket for the exam. Some PSUs may also conduct the entrance test, group discussion, and interviews separately to give students admission opportunities. PSU Cutoff through GATE 2023 will be decided by every Public Sector Undertakings individually. They will release those cutoffs through their official websites only.
