IELTS Listening Mock Test – Overview

The listening test of IELTS has a total of four different parts in it. Each part of the listening test is to be opened in a separate web page. Further, a candidate will be allotted a total of 30 minutes to listen to all the questions. Once the time is over candidates will be allotted next 10 minutes to write down the answers on paper. Further, there are a total of 40 questions in this section and every question is for one mark only. 

Once a candidate is done with all the four sections they will have to end down the answers and submit it. There are special arrangements for test-takers with disabilities. IELTS Listening Mock Test – Parts

Now, as we know there are a total of four parts or sections in the listening section of the IELTS listening test. For better understand the details about all these four paths are explained below: 

  1. Listening Part 1 – In this part of the test, there is a conversation between two people that may take place in everyday life. The first part of the listening test will have answers to a total of 1 to 10 questions in the paper.  
  2. Listening Part 2 – Further in the second part of the section candidate will have to listen to the audio in order to find answers to question 11 to 20. This part is a monologue set in an everyday social context.
  3. Listening Part 3 – It is a conversation between up to four people in an education or training context. In the third part of the test, candidates will have to listen to the audio and answer questions from 21-30 in the paper. 
  4. Listening Part 4 – Finally the fourth section will have answers to questions from 31 to 40. It is a monologue on an academic subject. Only after completing all the four parts will a candidate be able to submit the test.

IELTS Listening Mock Test – How to Improve?

Every section of IELTS exam is important and a candidate must give his/her best in every section at the time of test and also at the time of practicing for the test. Now each of the four parts of the test has a different type of questions asked. Therefore practice is just important to understand each of these parts. Apart from the basic practice through mocks and other available techniques, there are some of the basic things that can improve a candidate’s listening skills for the IELTS test. 

  1. At the beginning of each section read the question paper before the recording starts
  2. Always listen carefully and maintain your focus throughout the test.
  3. Emphasize on the words such as ‘firstly’, ‘next point’, ‘to sum up with’ to understand which stage of the recording you are in and subsequently to identify the questions that you have already reached.
  4. practice transcribing what you hear
  5. Markdown the mistakes you have done and analyze what made you get it wrong.
  6. Listen to the difficult parts again and again and understand the level of your listening skill and take action to improve it.

As per the British Council, a candidate taking IELTS must have the following points in mind before starting the test and throughout the process as well. 

  1. Do not open this question paper until you are told to do so
  2. Write your name and candidate number in the spaces at the top of this page
  3. Listen to the instructions for each part of the paper carefully
  4. Answer all the questions
  5. While you are listening, write your answers on the question paper
  6. You will have 10 minutes at the end of the test to copy your answers onto the separate answer sheet; use a pencil
