IFS Eligibility: Indian Foreign Service (IFS) is the administrative diplomatic civil service under Group A and Group B of the Central Civil Services of the executive branch of the Government of India. The administrative head of the service is the Foreign Secretary, and the political head of the service is the External Affairs Minister. It is the body of diplomats serving in more than 162 Indian Diplomatic Missions and International Organisations around the world. Candidates who wish to choose their career stream in the field of foreign service can take up the Indian Foreign Service exam. The detailed IFS eligibility criteria consist of various parameters which are given below:

IFS Eligibility Based On Nationality

The candidate must be one of the following:

  • a. Citizen of India.
  • b. Citizen of Nepal.
  • c. Citizen of Bhutan.
  • d. A Tibetian refugee who came to India before January 1, 1962, for permanent settlement in India.
  • e. Migrant from any of the following countries for permanent settlement in India: Pakistan, Burma, Srilanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, The United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam.

IFS Eligibility Based On Educational Qualification

The candidate must hold a graduate degree from any of recognised university or must have an equivalent qualification.

IFS Eligibility Based On Age Limit

The IFS age criteria is as under:

  • a. The minimum age required is 21 years.
  • b. The maximum age should be 30 years as of August 1 in the year of examination.

There is relaxation in the upper age limit for candidates belonging to reserved categories:

  • a. Up to max 5 years for SC/ST candidates.
  • b. Up to max 3 years for OBC candidates.
  • c. Up to max 5 years for candidates from Jammu & Kashmir.
  • d. Up to max 5 years for ex-servicemen, including commissioned officers and ECOs/SSCOs who have rendered at least 5 years of military service and have been released.
  • e. Up to max 5 years for ECOs/SSCOs who have completed an initial period of assignment of 5 years of military service.
  • f. Up to max 10 years for blind, deaf-mute and orthopaedically handicapped persons.

IFS Eligibility Based On Number Of Attempts

The maximum number of attempts for IFS is as follows:

  • a. 7 attempts for general category candidates.
  • b. No restriction for SC/ST candidates.
  • c. 9 attempts for other backward class candidates.

IFS aspirants must have the following skills:

  2. Decision-making ability.
  3. Leadership ability.
  4. Analytical ability.
  5. Excellent knowledge of foreign nations and current affairs.
