This year from the top 100 in the JEE rank list, 86 candidates chose IIT Bombay as their first choice and 12 candidates opted for IIT Delhi.
Mostly students preferred IIT Bombay as their first choice, because they feel
- The placements are the best in IIT Bombay
- There is flexibility in terms of faculty interaction and getting projects
- You may also get good internships
- IIT Bombay is the most liberal with such branch changes
- courses at IIT-B are tougher and better since you require more credits to clear a course.
Aravind K, who secured All India Rank 73 in JEE 2012 , took admission in IIT Bombay and is all set to become electrical engineer, said – “I spent around two months studying the structure of courses and I want one with the maximum physics in it. I have got into Electrical engineering but I may want to shift to mechanical. IIT-B, I hear, is the most liberal with such branch changes.”
Why do so Many IIT Toppers choose IIT Bombay, answered to this query ?
Here are some interesting answers for this question posted by Ryan Pal and Saurav Shekhar respectively for this question on an internet forum,
Answer by Ryan:
Lets consider top 5 iits (the 5 older iits),
They are located in kanpur, delhi, bombay, madras, kharagpur.
Kharagpur’s location is a major reason for its popularity to decrease (comparing to others).
Delhi and Bombay are the Big cities of india. Delhi being the capital and bombay being the financial capital.
The point is if someone has a choice between Delhi and Kanpur, one would chose Delhi, as it is a better city and both Delhi is well connected to other parts of country, so more accessible.
Similar is the comparison between Bombay and Madras, where people chose Bombay due to city and connectivity.
Delhi and Bombay are also well connected to other countries and attract more companies for placements.
Now its Delhi vs Bombay.
The point is, north indians will prefer IIT Delhi; south indians will prefer IIT Bombay. and those in middle parts of india will just follow previous year trends.
It can also be seen that South India usually gives more number of students in top 100 each year (Due to growing coaching industry in Andhra Pradesh maybe).
So, IIT Bombay becomes a more obvious choice for them.
And over the years, these factors have led to growing popularity of IIT Bombay.
And then, there is sheep effect.
Since, it is a trend that top rankers mostly prefer IIT Bombay, the next generation thinks that IIT Bombay is better and thats why the previous year toppers went for it.

The year I joined, AIR-1, Shitikanth, joined IIT Kanpur. I got to talk to him as in why he went for IIT K instead of the more hyped IIT B and if he ever regretted his decision, the answer to the second being a blatant NO, NEVER.
For why he went for IIT K, because of the best Computer Science Department and the best CS Faculty in the country (and I concur with him over it).
Now, why didn’t others made similar choices? Because, they didn’t care about academics that much. After coaching, you assume that all the hard work you had to do is over and now you deserve as much pleasure as there can be in this world.
You want girls. (Mumbai, Delhi: check)
You want places to vist/have fun (Again Mumbai, Delhi : check)
Better Hostels(Kanpur : check, Mumbai: okay, Delhi: God bless you)
Placements (Who cares? WE GOT IN IIT, WE WILL GET GODLY PLACEMENTS)
Academics:Tell me where I need to study the least(Mumbai: check, Delhi: Uncheck, Kanpur: God bless you)
Having this metric and maybe more in their minds, IITB obviously lead the chart
