Indian Number System: Indian place value chart is a writing system that was commonly used in India to represent numbers. Before the invention of numbers, individuals usually referred to objects such as stones, pebbles, sticks, rocks etc for making a count on things. When numbers were initially written, it was found necessary to adopt a standard counting system so that the complex nature of writing long numbers could be simplified. Eventually, the Indian System came into existence and people started using symbols or digits to count things. What is the Indian Number System?

Indian Number System Definition: The number system exists in two categories: the Indian system and the International system. The Indian System of Numeration or the Number System is known to be adopted to write numbers in India. In this method, we use 10 symbols to represent the numbers. The 10 symbols which are used in the Indian Numeral System are 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. Since this system is adopted in India, this is the Indian Counting System.

Usage of Commas

In the Indian Numeral System, we use commas to separate the numbers after every period of numbers. We use commas to divide the numbers to read or understand the numbers easily. The commas are placed post hundreds position after which they are placed after every two digits.

For example, the placement of the commas in ten crores (100000000) is: 10,00,00,000

How to Write Indian Place Value System

We write numbers in words based on the different place values of digits in the number. Before writing down the numbers in words in the Indian System of arranging numbers, we will have to consider the following points:

  1. First, we will have to mark the separators or commas to name the numbers.
  2. Based on the commas only we can name numbers in the number system in India.

Example: 48,78,96,876 can be written in words as Forty-eight cores seventy-eight lakhs ninety-six thousand eight hundred and seventy-six.

There is a huge difference between the Indian Number System and the International Number System.
