BANGALORE, AUGUST 4: Professor Sudhir Krishnaswamy has been appointed the next Vice Chancellor of National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bangalore. Prof Krishnaswamy succeeds Prof Venkata Rao, whose VC-ship tenure ended on May 10, 2019. The NLSIU Bangalore till the appointment of the new NLSIU Bangalore VC will have Prof (Dr) MK Ramesh serving as Additional Vice-Chancellor of the National Law School.
The decision of NLSIU Bangalore VC appointment has been taken by the National Law School Executive Council pursuant to the recommendation made by a Committee constituted for this purpose. The Committee was headed by the Supreme Court Judge, Justice SA Bobde.
The Committee also included sitting Supreme Court Judge, Justice Mohan M Shantanagoudar, retired Supreme Court judge, Justice V Gopala Gowda and Professor (Dr.) VS Elizabeth. The Bar Council of India (BCI) Chairperson, Manan Kumar Mishra, was also part of the Committee had sent a letter communication to the Committee.
The Committee met on July 23 at Supreme Court to decide on the final three shortlisted candidates-
- Professor Sudhir Krishnaswamy
- Professor Shashikala Gurpur
- Professor Srikrishna Deva Rao
Interestingly, the final recommended candidate, Prof. Sudhir Krishnaswamy is an NLSIU Bangalore alumnus. He graduated with a BA LLB degree from the National Law School 1998 Batch. Prof. Krishnaswamy has been a Teaching Fellow in Law at the Pembroke College at Oxford University, an Assistant Professor at NLSIU and a Professor at the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJS), Kolkata.
The NLS alumnus and the next NLSIU Bangalore VC is also a co-founder of the Centre for Law and Policy Research (CLPR).
