Difference Between JEE Mains and JEE Advanced Syllabus 

The JEE Main syllabus includes the topics of CBSE Class 11 and 12 Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Electronic Devices, Electromagnetic Waves, and Communication Systems are covered in JEE Main but not in JEE Advanced syllabus. Similarly, some Mathematics courses, such as Sets, Relations and Functions, Statistics and Probability, Trigonometry, and Mathematical Reasoning, are covered in JEE Main but not in JEE Advanced. 

Unlike the JEE main, the JEE Advanced syllabus includes a few more topics apart from the class 11th and 12th syllabus. Note that JEE main does not include some topics like Thermal Physics which is included in JEE Advanced. Similarly, Electrochemistry is included in JEE Advanced but not in JEE main.

Topics Included in JEE Main but Not in JEE Advanced Physics:

  • Electronic Devices: Semiconductors; semiconductor diode: I-V characteristics in forward and reverse bias; diodes as a rectifier; I-V characteristics of LED, photodiode, solar cell, and diode; Zener diode as a voltage regulator. Junction transistor, transistor action, characteristics of a transistor; transistor as an amplifier (common emitter configuration) and Oscillator. Logic gates (OR, AND, NOT, NAND and NOR). Transistor as a switch.
  • Electromagnetic Waves: Electromagnetic waves; Characteristics of Electromagnetic Waves; Transverse nature of electromagnetic waves; Electromagnetic spectrum; Applications of Electromagnetic waves (will be included in JEE Advanced 2023 syllabus).
  • Communication Systems: Electromagnetic waves’ propagation; Amplitude and Frequency Modulation; Bandwidth of signals & transmission medium; Basic elements of a Communication System (Block Diagram only).

Topics Included in JEE Advanced but Not in JEE Main Chemistry

  • Electrochemistry: Equivalent Conductivity.
  • Nuclear Chemistry: Radioactivity; Properties of alpha, beta and gamma rays; Kinetics of radioactive decay (decay series excluded), carbon dating; Stability of nuclei with respect to proton-neutron ratio; Brief discussion on fission and fusion reactions.(Not included from JEE Advanced 2023)

  • Biomolecules: Vitamins – Classification and functions; Proteins, Nucleic acids – Chemical constitution of DNA and RNA. (Will be included from JEE Advanced 2023)
  • Chemistry in Everyday Life: Chemicals in medicines – Analgesics, tranquillizers, antiseptics, disinfectants, antimicrobials, antifertility drugs, antibiotics, antacids, antihistamine – their meaning and common examples.
  • Chemicals in food: Preservatives, artificial sweetening agents – common examples. Cleansing agents – Soaps and detergents, cleansing action. (Will be included from JEE Advanced 2023)

Topics Included in JEE Main but Not in JEE Advanced Maths

  • Sets, Relations and Functions: Sets and their representation; Union, intersection and complement of sets and their algebraic properties; power set; relation, Types of relations, equivalence relations. (Will be included from JEE Advanced 2023)
  • Statistics and Probability: Measures of Dispersion; calculation of mean, median. Mode of grouped and ungrouped data calculation of standard deviation, variance and mean deviation for grouped and ungrouped data. (Will be included from JEE Advanced 2023)
  • Trigonometry: Heights and Distances.
  • Mathematical Reasoning: Statements, logical operations and, or, implies, implied by, if and only if. Understanding of tautology, contradiction, converse and contrapositive.

Differentiating the Preparation of the JEE Mains and JEE Advanced

Though the JEE Advanced preparation is not very different from JEE Main, candidates must study the same concepts and topics. Candidates may find differences while solving mock tests and previous years’ papers for both exams as they have slightly different exam patterns.

Similarly, preparation for JEE Advanced covers the preparation for JEE Main. Still, JEE Main involves more memory work and is more speed and accuracy oriented, while JEE Advanced requires a deep understanding of concepts. 

Note that the theory of JEE Main and IIT JEE is very similar, but the questions and problems in JEE Advanced are of a higher level. Because JEE Advanced is tougher, the questions require a deeper understanding of concepts. Every concept you learn in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics will be tested in the JEE Advanced paper.

Therefore, IIT JEE requires understanding concepts and using applications to solve problems. A practice test and previous years’ questions are essential for JEE Advanced. Taking the JEE Advanced will test your exam temperament (6 hours of papers, with 2 hours of breaks between paper-1 and paper-2).

  • JEE Main is open to anyone who meets the eligibility criteria. Nevertheless, only the top 2,50,000 rankers of JEE Main are eligible to sit for JEE Advanced.
  • Several prestigious institutes such as IITs and ISM Dhanbad will only accept candidates based on their All India Rank (AIR) in IIT JEE if they have scored in the top 20 percentile of their respective Boards.
  • JEE Main Paper 1 consists of multiple-choice questions about Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. JEE Advanced asks objective-type questions from the same domain for both papers.
  • JEE Main paper 1 is available as a pen-and-paper or online test.
  • JEE Main Paper 2 is strictly for admission into the B.Arch, B.Plan program. Those interested in pursuing Architecture and Design courses in an IIT shall be required to sit for the Design Aptitude Test in a zonal IIT sometime later.
  • A candidate can sit for the JEE Main a maximum of three times during his lifetime, while a candidate can attempt JEE (Advanced) a maximum of two times in consecutive years.
