As per board guidelines and exam schemes, the respective schools evaluate the students through Summative and Formative Assessment modules throughout the year. But at the end of the day, all the students are generally promoted to the next higher class.

If a student scores below 25% in some subjects in Summative Evaluation or Formative Evaluation or both, then the student is given one month to improve in all the areas (both Summative and Formative) and evaluated again. This process is repeated until the student improves sufficiently to score 25% plus and be promoted to the next higher class.

Hence, all the grade 7 students are promoted to Class 8 following this methodology.

Exam Counselling

Student Counselling

6th, 7th and 8th grade studies are considered to be the foundation courses of any secondary level school education. Students at this age need both mental and physical growth. Along with studies, they also need to play. Studies are necessary for their foundation for higher classes. But, for proper growth in all dimensions, they need to balance their studies, sports and all other activities. It is absolutely crucial for a student to strike a balance in everything they are doing. But many times they do not know how to do it. There is a tendency to get carried away in everything that they are doing at that moment. Every student needs to be counselled and monitored on this. They should be counselled by their teachers at school, by parents and close relatives at home and around.

Practical Knowledge/Career Goals

Prediction

Learning from Real World

Secondary education in West Bengal starts at grade 6. Grades 6 to 8 are considered the foundation period before a student prepares mentally and academically for the 10th board exam, which is the only board-level exam to complete secondary education.

So, when a student completes his education in grade 7, he/she gets used to the initial wonder of being in a senior class such as:

  1. a different style of teaching than in the primary grade
  2. thicker books with a larger syllabus

After getting familiar with grade 6, a student then prepares for:

  1. even thicker books with more coverage in the syllabus
  2. more mathematics – more formulas to remember
  3. more Science, more History, more Geography – more facts and figures to remember.

Future Skills

A Class 7 student, apart from studies, has to also learn and acquire a few basic skills such as:

a) Skills to get used to different teaching methodologies

b) More and thicker books, more subjects, more vast syllabus

c) Different exam structures and evaluation schemes

d) Skill of writing the answer paper in a neat and clean manner

e) Skill of to the point answering

f) Skill of handling larger things and many things together

Career Prospects/Which stream to choose

The 7th West Bengal board is responsible for conducting the middle of the foundation course in the secondary education system. There is no scope for a student to choose subjects for his / her career path. Well, the student can only choose one of the language subjects from each group of the first, second and third language subjects. But all other non-language subjects are compulsory. From Classes 6 till 10 the student has to learn all the subjects and make his foundation stronger. 7th-grade studies is the middle step of the foundation phase. The student’s choice of the stream (Science / Commerce / Arts) and the choice of the career path will come after the 10th exam at the time of admission into the 11th grade.
