Right to Repair Portal Launched

  • Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Piyush Goyal recently introduced a host of new initiatives, including a ‘right to repair’ portal and an NTH mobile app and opened new premises of the National Consumer Helpline centre in the national capital.

Why Is the ‘Right to Repair’ Needed?

  • When the average consumer buys electronic equipment, they are aware that it will quickly become obsolete when the maker introduces newer versions of the same device.
  • As the item ages, problems arise, and one is left at the mercy of manufacturers, who make repairs inaccessible to the majority by dictating who can service your equipment and making it an extremely expensive process.
  • This is a question that advocates of the global ‘right to repair’ movement have been dealing with for decades.
  • Countries all across the world (including the US and the UK) have been striving to implement effective ‘right to repair’ laws in recent years.

About Right to Repair Portal:

  • On this portal manufacturers will share the manual of product details with customers so that they can either repair it by themselves or by third parties rather than depend on the original manufacturers.
  • Initially, mobile phones, electronics, consumer durables, automobiles and farming equipment will be covered.
  • It allows consumers to repair and modify their consumer products against the manufacturer requiring them to use their services either by restricting access to tools and components or putting in place software barriers.

Significance:

  • Reduce pollution and wastage of resources
  • Boost business for small repair shops
  • Improves quality and reduces prices

How Can This Right Be Exercised?

  • Step 1: Go to this site – https://www.righttorepairindia.in/home
  • Step 2: Enter the brand or product name in the space mentioned OR scroll below to find names of various products, such as mobiles, Audio, Microwave ovens etc. Click on the type of product you want to repair. (Or you can search products brand-wise also.)
  • Step 3: On the left, you’ll find a “Find Consumer Brands” section. Enter Sub-Category and sub-group. Click on search.
  • Here you’ll find all the customer service details of the brand, including the product manual.

Question:

Which of the following ministries recently launched the ‘Right to Repair’ Portal?

A. Ministry of Consumer Affairs

B. Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology

C. Ministry of Information and Broadcasting

D. Ministry of Corporate Affairs

What Are the Features of a Bomb Cyclone?

  • The corridor off the US East Coast is notorious for bombogenesis events.
  • The bomb cyclone will be characterised by cold winds, which are also expected to pick up, and wind chill temperatures could drop to dangerous lows far below zero—enough to cause frostbite within minutes.
  • The dangerous storm is expected to hit everyone east of the Rockies — around two-thirds of the country.
