Navy gets first-ever made-in-India fuze for underwater anti-submarine rockets

  • In what is being seen as a major success for the “Make in India” initiative in the defence sector, the Indian Navy has received a fully indigenised fuze for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) underwater rocket manufactured for the first time by private Indian industry.

Details:

  • Fully indigenised fuze YDB-60 for underwater anti-submarine warfare (ASW) rocket RGB-60 used from major warships through a private manufacturer, M/s Economic Explosives Limited (EEL), Nagpur.
  • Fuze is part of the weapon or ammunition that initiates its function. In torpedoes, the function is to explode.
  • Fuze may have electronic or mechanical parts. There are different fuze types: artillery fuze, hand grenade fuze, aerial bomb fuze, landmine fuze, naval mine fuze, etc. Apart from this, there are time fuzes, impact fuze, proximity fuze, barometric fuze, combination fuze, etc.

About RGB-60 rocket:

  • RGB-60 is a rocket used to hit submarines. 
  • It is 212 mm in diameter and 1830 mm in length. 
  • The range of RGB-60 is 300m to 5,500m. It operates with a two-stage motor. It is charged with Torpex. Torpex is a mixture of RDX, aluminium, and TNT. Torpex is mainly used in underwater firings.

Theatre Level Operational Readiness Exercise (TROPEX-23)

  • Indian Navy’s major Operational level exercise TROPEX for the year 2023, conducted across the expanse of IOR (Indian Ocean Region) over a duration of four months from Nov 2022 – Mar 2023, culminated this week in the Arabian Sea. 
  • The overall exercise construct included the Coastal Defence exercise Sea Vigil and the Amphibious Exercise AMPHEX. Together, these exercises also witnessed significant participation from the Indian Army, the Indian Air Force and the Coast Guard. 

Details of the Exercise:

  • Set in the Indian Ocean, including the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, the theatre of operations for the exercise extended approximately 4300 nm from North to South up to 35 deg South Latitude and 5000 nm from the Persian Gulf in the West to North Australia coast in the East, spanning an area of over 21 million square nautical miles. 
  • TROPEX 23 witnessed the participation of approximately 70 Indian Navy ships, six submarines and over 75 aircraft.

  • The promotional films will provide a glimpse of what India has to offer to the World.

Scientists discover the oldest known fossils of Pollen-Carrying Insects

  • Scientists have recently discovered 280-million-year-old fossils of insects and the world’s first plant pollinators called tillyardembiids preserved with pollen on their bodies.
  • They were found along the riverbank, close to the village of Chekarda in Russia.
  • These record-setting remains are around 120 million years older than the previously oldest known fossils of pollen-carrying insects.
  • The team examined 425 fossils of an insect called Tillyardembia and realised that six were preserved with pollen on their heads, bodies or legs.
  • Tillyardembiids are earwig-like insects with flattened bodies.
  • They are older than mosquitoes found in Jurassic Park, which is around 200 million years old. 
  • The rock on which the insect fossil was found is a sedimentary rock. It was under a lagoon about 280 million years ago.

Anupama Ramachandran wins the Women’s Snooker World Cup

  • India’s Anupama Ramachandran won the under-21 title in the world women’s snooker championships with a 79-13, 61-63, 31-76, 83-55, 53-42 victory over Ploychompoo Laokiatphong of Thailand in the final.
  • The Women’s Snooker World Cup is being held in Bangkok, Thailand.

Manik Saha sworn in as 13th CM of Tripura

Visit of French Navy Ships to Kochi

  • French Navy Ships FS Dixmude, an amphibious helicopter carrier and La Fayette, a frigate, are on a visit to Kochi from 06 – 10 March 2023 as part of a circumnavigation mission and will be discussing a wide range of issues of maritime cooperation between the two Navies.  
  • During the ongoing visit, the French team visited professional training schools and ships of Southern Naval Command. Cross-training visits, and professional and social interaction, including sports fixtures, were some of the highlights of the visit. 
  • The French Army embarked onboard ships and will also conduct joint military exercises with the Indian Army. 
  • Indo-French Naval cooperation is a key element in strengthening regional maritime security and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. 
  • The visit of the French ships significantly contributed towards strong bilateral defence ties and strategic partnerships between the two nations.

Rest of India (ROI) beat Madhya Pradesh to win Irani Cup

  • The Rest of India (ROI) team has captured the Irani Cup for the 25th time by defeating Madhya Pradesh by a margin of 238 runs in the final.
  • The Rest of India became champions for the second time in a row.
  • Earlier, they had managed to defeat Saurashtra in the 2019–20 season. The Irani Cup was not held in 2020–21 due to the Corona pandemic.
  • Yashasvi Jaiswal was awarded Player of the Match for his role as a centurion in both innings of the match against Madhya Pradesh.
  • Mumbai opener Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 213 in the first innings and 144 in the second innings.
