CBSE Class 12 Eligibility Criteria

CBSE releases the Class 12 eligibility criteria every year which students must adhere to before applying for the CBSE 12th board exams. The notification is posted on the official website which all students can easily access if they want to refer.

The eligibility criteria for CBSE Class 12 outline the minimum requirements pertaining to age, education level, attendance, education board, candidate background, disability status, etc. Students are to strictly ensure they abide by them and procure the relevant documents, wherever applicable, for justification. For Regular Candidates

• Candidates applying for the CBSE 12th exams must have cleared Class 11 from CBSE or any other education board recognised by CBSE.
• Candidates must be currently studying in Class 12 from CBSE or any other education board recognised by CBSE and must have completed at least one academic year in Class 12.
• They must meet the minimum attendance requirements set by CBSE.
• Although there is no specific age criteria for appearing in CBSE Class 12 exam, the minimum age is usually considered to be 17 years. This may differ from region to region or school to school.

For Private and Other Candidates

• Any candidate who has failed CBSE Class 12 will be eligible to reappear at the next scheduled 12th board exam as a private candidate.
• Private candidates will have to follow the syllabus and textbooks of the year in which they will be reappearing.
• Teachers who are serving in institutes affiliated to CBSE and have already passed Class 10 exams at least two years prior will be eligible to appear in the Class 12 exam. These candidates are required to submit their application form along with a certificate by the Head of the school in which they are serving. The certificate must be countersigned by the Director of Education of the State/Union Territory.
• Female candidates who are residents of the National Capital Territory of Delhi, and have passed Class 10 at least two prior will be eligible to appear in the Class 12 exam.
• Physically handicapped candidates who have passed Class 10 at least two years prior will also be eligible to appear in the Class 12 exam. They are required to produce a legitimate document of their disability because of which they were unable to attend regular classes/school.
• For the former two categories (special female category and handicapped category), candidates are required to privately complete the prescribed syllabus under adequate guidance. They must also state compelling reasons (with necessary documents if required) as to why they were unable to pursue regular CBSE Class 12 classes and hence, appear as a private candidate.
