What Is Heptagon?

Heptagon is a two-dimensional polygon with equal sides and angles. It is a seven-sided polygon. The word heptagon is derived from hepta meaning seven and gon meaning sides. The heptagon consists of 14 diagonals and measures the sum of interior angles to 900 degrees. We can say that heptagon is a closed shape made of a straight line. Sometimes, heptagon is also called a Septagon.

There are two types of heptagon such as:

  1. Regular and Irregular Heptagon: Heptagon having equal sides and angles are called regular heptagon whereas, heptagon having unequal sides and angles is called as irregular heptagon.
  2. Convex and Concave Heptagon: The diagonals lying inside the heptagon is called as convex heptagon whereas, the diagonals lying outside the heptagon with one or two interior angles greater than 180 degree is called as concave heptagon.

Perimeter Of Heptagon

The perimeter of the heptagon is the sum of length of its sides.

Perimeter of Heptagon= 7 x a (Sides)

Area Of Heptagon

The area of heptagon is the space occupied by the sides of the heptagon.

Area of Heptagon= 3.634 x a2 (Side Length)

Properties Of Heptagon

Some of the properties of heptagon are as follows:

  1. It has seven sides, angles and vertices.
  2. It has 14 diagonals.
  3. The sum of interior angles is equal to 900 degrees.
  4. The sum of exterior angles is equal to 300 degrees.
  5. Regular heptagons are also known as convex heptagon.
  6. There are five triangles appearing in heptagon.

Examples Of Heptagon

Some of the examples of heptagon are given below:

Example 1: Find the area of regular heptagon whose side is 6 cm?

Solution: The side of a heptagon, a = 6 cm

We know that

The area of a heptagon, A = 3.634 x 6 2 square units

A= 3.634 X 36

A= 130.82 cm2

Therefore, the area of heptagon is 130.82 cm2

Example 2: Find the perimeter of regular heptagon whose side is 4 cm?

Solution: Given, a = 4 cm

The perimeter of heptagon is P= 7 x a

P= 7 x 4= 28

Therefore, the perimeter of heptagon is 28 cm
