UGC NET Eligibility Criteria 2023

Age Criteria

  • Candidates for JRF in the general category must be younger than 31.
  • For candidates in the reserved category, the age limit will be lowered by five years. Candidates with research experience may be eligible for relaxation, but it will only be limited to the time they spent conducting research for their post-graduate degree in a relevant or related discipline.
  • For female candidates, there would also be a 5-year relaxation.
  • A three-year relaxation may be available to candidates with a Master of Laws (LLM).
  • Candidates are eligible for a 5-year period of relaxation if they have served in the military.
  • There will be no upper age limit for candidates applying for UGC NET Assistant Professor.

Education Qualification

  • A master’s degree is required, or you must have passed an exam that was given by an accredited university that was comparable to it. Students in their final post-graduation year are also eligible to apply.
  • General/unreserved applicants must have a minimum of 55% in their Master’s degree to be eligible to apply for the UGC NET.
  • For candidates belonging to the SC, ST, OBC, NCL, and PwD categories, it is mandatory to have a master’s degree or an equivalent degree with a a score of at least 50%.
  • Candidates enrolled in a Master’s programme or comparable programme, as well as those whose qualifying Master’s degree (final year) exams that have been postponed or for whom results have not yet been received announced, are also eligible to take this exam. In such cases, candidates will only be admitted provisionally, and they will have to successfully complete their master’s degree with a grade point average of 50% for the SC, ST, OBC, and PwD categories and 55% for the General category.
  • The examination is open to PhD candidates who finished their post-graduate coursework by September 19, 1991. Additionally, these candidates are qualified for a 5% score reduction overall.
  • The same relaxation criteria apply to candidates in the transgender category as to candidates in the SC/ ST/ PwD categories.
