Answer: The human eye can focus objects at different distances by adjusting the focal length of the eye lens. The ability of the eye lens to adjust its focal length is called accommodation. The focusing to near and suddenly far objects, this adjustment is done through the accommodation of an eye. All the other three are defects of an eye.

Question: Explain why the planets do not twinkle.

Answer: The planets are much closer to the earth and are thus seen as extended sources. If we consider a planet as a collection of a large number of point-sized sources of light, the total variation in the amount of light entering our eye from all the individual point- sized sources will average out to zero, thereby nullifying the twinkling effect.

Question: Why does the sky appear dark instead of blue to an astronaut?

Answer: The sky appears dark to an astronaut because there is no atmosphere in the outer space that can scatter the sunlight. As the sunlight is not scattered, no scattered light reaches the eyes of the astronauts, and the sky appears black to them.

Class 10 Science Chapter 11: Chapter Summary

Chapter Description: The Human Eye has been the subject of conflicting interpretations since ancient times. Many ancient physicians and philosophers believed in the idea of the “active eye”, according to which light emits from the eye, seizing objects with its rays. Al-Haytham made the most significant breakthrough around 1000 AD. He argued that humans could see because of light entering the eye from an outside source and there is no light beam from the eye itself.

The chapter Human Eye and The Colourful World is an extension of Chapter 10 (Light – Reflection and Refraction). In this chapter, we will learn about the Human Eye, the Power of Accommodation, Defects in the Human Eye, and their Correction. We will use the concept of reflection and refraction to study some of the optical phenomena in nature, the formation of the rainbow, the splitting of white light, the blue colour of the sky, and the colour of the sun at sunrise and sunset. A strong hold on the topics from this chapter will also benefit students in their further classes.
