Q.7. Compare the power used in the 2 Ω resistor in each of the following circuits: (i) a 6 V battery in series with 1 Ω and 2 Ω resistors, and (ii) a 4 V battery in parallel with 12 Ω and 2 Ω resistors.
Solution:
(i) Power used, P=I2R=V2R
Here, Iis the current through resistor and Vis the potential difference across the resistor,
P=61+22×2=8 W
(ii)Power used, P=I2R=V2R Here, I is the current through resistor and Vis the potential difference across the resistor.
P=422=8 W
Power consumed by 2 Ω resistor in both cases is the same and is equal to 8 W.
Q.8. Two lamps, one rated 100 W at 220 V, and the other 60 W at 220 V, are connected in parallel to the electric mains supply. What current is drawn from the line if the supply voltage is 220 V?
Solution:
Given,
Rated power of first bulb, P1= 100 W and Rated voltage, V= 220 V
Rated power of second bulb, P2=60 W and Rated voltage, V= 220 V Resistance of the first lamp, R1=V2P1=2202100=484 Ω Resistance of the second lamp, R2=V2P2=220260=806.67 Ω If these two resistors are joined in parallel, equivalent resistance, Req=484×806.67484+806.67
Current drawn from the line, I=VReq ⇒I=220484×806.67484+806.67=220302.5=0.727 A
