Magnets are widely used in various day-to-day applications. Magnets have a special property to attract few other metals, such as Iron, Nickel, and Cobalt. Thus, materials can be classified as Magnetic materials which attract to a magnet and non- magnetic materials which don’t attract to a magnet.
Magnet was an accidental discovery. It was basically a stone with the property to attract magnetic materials. Such rocks were named as magnetite, which is a natural magnet. Nowadays magnetic materials are magnetised to prepare artificial magnets which are used for various purposes.
A magnet has a north pole and a south pole which aligns itself to the Earth’s north and south poles when freely suspended from the centre. By performing the various activities provided in the textbook, you will become aware of the different properties of magnets. These properties can be used for various applications and of course, can also be used to have fun with magnets! You can also make your own magnet, compass and many other cool stuff.
