Entrance Exam Eligibility Criteria

Embibe Content World

Knowing the eligibility standard of the entrance test before applying for the same is extremely important because no aspirant would want to be disqualified at later stages if the exam-conducting authority finds out that any candidate has failed to satisfy the eligibility conditions.

1. Educational Qualification

Aspirants must have completed their intermediate from a reputed college or university. For example, both JEE Main and NEET require aspirants to have completed their Class 12 exams with the required percentage of marks and in the required year.

Some exams only require Class 10 as one of the prerequisites.

a) Year of Appearance

In addition to having passed the high school or intermediate exams, some exams make it compulsory that aspirants must have done it at least within a given year, such as in 2021, or 2022, or should be appearing for the current year—2023; the same instance applies to JEE Main.

2. Age Limit

For more entrance tests, the upper age limit does not apply; however, candidates are recommended to check exam-specific age limitations to always be on the safer side. For instance, NEET requires that aspirants be at least 17 years of age as on December 31, 2024.

3. Nationality

While most entrance tests in India make Indian citizenship mandatory, some even allow foreign aspirants to submit the application form. NEET eligibility says that even Overseas Citizens of India (OCI), Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), and even Foreign Nationals can apply for the entrance exam.

4. Minimum Aggregate Marks

Another condition that aspirants must satisfy while applying for entrance tests is minimum marks for the qualifying exam. For example, NEET mandates that General aspirants must score a minimum of 45% marks, while SC/ST/OBC must score at least 35%.

5. Number of Attempts

This is another criterion that aspirants should look at while applying for entrance tests in India. This specifies the number of how many times they can appear for the exam within a specified time.

For example, JEE Advanced mandates that aspirants can only take it a maximum of two times in two consecutive years—not more than that.

However, for NEET, there is no such criterion.

6. Earlier Admission at IITs

Some exams like JEE Advanced also require that one should not have been admitted to an IIT through JoSAA 2023. Now, other rules apply in this case side by side. Therefore, it is always ideal to ensure that you agree to all the eligibility criteria before making up your mind for an entrance test.
