NTSE Stage I - Madhya Pradesh Study Plan to Maximise Score

Study Plan to Maximise Score

Preparation Tips

The NTSE exam is conducted to identify academically bright students who are eligible for receiving a relevant scholarship and financial aid to support their education. NCERT provides this scholarship for a total of 2000 students.

As the competition is tough and students get only one chance to appear for this scholarship, everyone must give their best to cross the threshold.

Following are some of the preparations tips students can follow to achieve good grades in the NTSE 2022:

  • Know your exam well: You must have in-depth knowledge and understanding of the field where you want to conquer something. As we are dealing with a national competitive exam in this scenario, students need to be well-versed with details such as the examination timetable, the exam’s format, syllabus, etc.
  • Understanding the syllabus: Candidates must have a thorough understanding of the syllabus and be able to mark all of the important topics. As we already know that there is no specific syllabus for the NTSE exam, students should study the syllabus of 9th and 10th thoroughly as the questions in the exam will be from these grades.
It will be best if a student has planned to take the exam after his/her 10th exam while he/she is still in grade 9. Long term planning is much more effective than last-minute preparation.
  • Making a timetable: A well-balanced timetable helps you to manage your learning process along with other activities. Hence, making a timetable is the most important step for exam preparation.
Make a full schedule of the syllabus, separate the units and chapters, and mark all the important topics that need to be covered well in time. Always glance at what you have learnt before going to a new topic. This will help you not to forget anything with time.
  • Solve previous year’s questions papers and mock tests: Solving previous question papers and taking mock tests help students in better understanding the exam pattern, marks distribution, etc. It also allows you to manage your time during exams and helps you get a proper revision, acts as writing practice and last but not least helps you find your weak areas.
  • Revision: Do not hurry to complete the whole syllabus in a short period. You might end up forgetting topics you learnt in the beginning. This is not the right way of learning. Once you complete a topic, do revise it once in the next session before moving on to a new topic. Do not try to mug up as it may also lead to confusion.
  • Develop speed and accuracy: You need to solve questions as quickly as you can or else you will run out of time in the end. It is not easy but with continuous practice and dedication it is possible. Solve as many questions you can, this will help you to learn tips and tricks and also build problem-solving skills.
  • Take breaks while studying: Taking short breaks between study sessions is important to break up the monotony and give the mind a fresh perspective. A student can take 3-4 breaks in between while studying for the NTSE exams as it might get stressful to study at a stretch.
  • Stay healthy by eating well: As the saying goes, “a healthy mind dwells in a healthy body”, students must not forget to eat healthy food while studying. Eating well aids in the development of a healthy body and mind, allowing you to focus more on preparing for the exam.

NTSE Stage I - Madhya Pradesh Exam Taking Strategy

As we know, the NTSE exam is divided into two papers, the Mental Ability Test (MAT) and Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). Students must give importance to both papers. Following are some tips and tricks to score well in these sections.

Exam taking Strategy for Mental Ability Test (MAT)

The mental ability section includes both reasoning and interpretation topics. A candidate has to apply various approaches for different types of questions. Although there is no prescribed syllabus for this section, students can perform well in this section by following the tips given below:

  • The candidate must read the question thoroughly to solve any mental ability challenges. For example, if you are answering a data interpretation question, try to carefully study the data before reaching conclusions.
  • For blood relation questions, make a tree diagram by assigning symbols to various family members. You can assign a circle to the mother, a square to the father, and so on. Draw the symbols of the members stated in the problem as you read the questions. This will help you to get correct answers to blood relation problems.
  • The majority of coding-decoding questions follow a specific pattern to solve the problem. Whether it be letter codes or substitution questions, the pattern is the key to solve the coding and decoding questions.
  • Verbal analogy questions are asked in a variety of styles. The candidates need to identify the analogy of one set of words based on the first pair of words.

Take a look at the sample question below:

Q: Seismograph : Earthquake :: Taseometer : ?

A) Landslides
B) Strains
C) Resistances
D) Volcanoes
Answer: The correct answer is ‘B’.
Explanation: A seismograph is a device used to measure the intensity of an earthquake. Similarly, a Taseometer is a device used to quantify physical strains in a structure.

  • For jumbled paragraph questions, candidates need to identify the opening sentence of the paragraph. The first word of the sentence is important as it introduces the topic. Similarly, recognise the closing sentence. This will help you to understand 50% answers to the para jumble question.
  • In the assertion section of the question, there is a simple statement. The reason part of the question provides an explanation or statement concerning the assertion. Applicants are given four options from which one is the right answer. Candidates must determine if the assertions and reasons are true or false and then select the appropriate answer.
  • There are four main directions in addition to the four cardinal directions. The best technique to answer a direction problem is to construct a diagram showing the four major directions: North, East, South, and West. Keep adding person/directions to the diagram while reading and understanding the question.

Exam taking Strategy for Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT)

The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) paper is designed to check the academic knowledge, reading skills, application skills, of the student. Questions in this section are chosen from a list of subjects including Physics, Biology, Chemistry, History, Geography, Economics, and Political Science. It also comprises a language comprehensive test.

There will be many different types of questions, but they will all be multiple-choice (MCQs). Questions such as arranging the sequence, matching the correct answer, true and false statements, and, last but not least, comprehension passage-based questions are a few examples of these. Such variety makes the SAT section more difficult and students tend to make more mistakes in this section than the MAT of NTSE.

  • Details of Language Test: The exam paper will be set in both Hindi and English. However, English is the most popular option because Hindi can be unclear or difficult to understand at times. The purpose of a language test is to assess your command of the language, your understanding, and your ability to communicate in that language.
As it is a national level exam, it is essential to have expressive power with good mental ability and skill. Types of questions asked in this test include Antonyms and Synonyms, One Word Substitution, Paragraph Completion, Reading Comprehension, Rearrangement of Jumbled Words, and Sentence Completion, etc.
  • Important Topics for Mathematics: Geometry, algebra, mensuration, number systems, and profit and loss are some prominent topics in mathematics that are regularly asked in exams and are a significant part of the NTSE syllabus. Students are recommended to expertise themselves on these topics for NTSE.
In the case of Algebra, algebraic expressions may comprise ordinary numbers, variables, and mathematical operators. Arithmetic, basic geometry, circles, direct and inverse variation, mensuration, simple interest and compound interest, square root and cube root, statistics, trigonometry, coordinate geometry, and other mathematical questions are all very important.
  • Important Topics for Science: Science is the most important subject that includes topics like gravity, energy, liquids and gases, conservation of energy, history of physics, solids, liquids and gases, nutrition, natural gases, cells, common diseases, properties of solids, properties of chemical elements under dangerous conditions.
State boards often include questions from the environment, problems of the environment, biology-based topics such as plant and animal nutrition, reproduction, human body, food production and management, diversity in living organisms, etc., which are often given preference and should be studied in detail.
  • Important Topics for Social Science: Nationalism in Europe, Nationalism in India, Physical Features of India, Climate, French Revolution, Consumer Rights, Nazism and The Rise Of Hitler, Poverty in India, Indian Economics, Indian Constitution, National Economy, The history of the Mughal dynasty, ancient civilizations, legislative assembly, government structure, types of banks, recent general happenings, political events, awards, etc., are some of the important topics in Social Science. These are the most commonly questioned topics in NTSE and are a key part of the NTSE curriculum.
  • General Knowledge Questions: General Knowledge questions evaluate a student’s knowledge in a variety of areas, including abbreviations, awards and recognition, books and authors, India, sports, and the world. Students who pay close attention to the news on a daily basis will have no or less trouble answering this subject.

NTSE Stage I - Madhya Pradesh Study Plan

Follow the tips given below for creating a detailed study plan for yourself:

  • Align your NTSE preparation for MAT and SAT with your board exam: The best method to prepare for the NTSE Scholarship Aptitude Test is to connect your board exam preparations with NTSE. For example, if you are studying biology, check for related questions in previous years’ papers or NTSE sample papers from the chapter you’re studying. You will be able to read for both Board examinations and the NTSE in this manner and earn good scores.
  • Solving test series questions: Attempt to solve 10 maths problems in 15 minutes at the start of your NTSE maths preparation, and thereafter lower the duration to at least 10 minutes. You should take at least one mock test per subject every day in other sections such as science and social science. Also, make a list of the challenges you haven’t figured out yet and the questions you’re having trouble answering.
  • Have proper planning: Board students typically get confused about how they can get scores on both board exams and NTSE altogether because both exams are important and they are both really difficult. Count every hour you have to devote to your studies and divide it according to your board exam date. For the SST section, 1 hour a day is enough time so that you can find it interesting as well as maintain the consistency.
  • Make Use of the Internet Efficiently: You are not required to always read from a physical copy or in a conventional manner. You might typically spend your time on your smartphones or in front of the computer. You can use that time to take random tests relevant to the NTSE exam to avoid boredom while still making good use of your time.
  • Attempt all questions: As there is no negative marking in the NTSE, you should try to answer all of the questions. Give second-round solving in the last 20 minutes of the exam. It will help you improve your marks. If you’re not sure about a question, apply the elimination technique to collect as many marks as possible.
  • Choosing the best books: Questions included in the exam paper are mainly from the NCERT syllabus. Hence, NCERT textbooks up to 10th grade must be read thoroughly to achieve high grades.
