Candidates who have appeared for the CAT exam must follow the below procedure for the calculation of the CAT percentile. Calculation of CAT percentile mainly includes three steps. As per the latest CAT exam pattern, three marks will be awarded for every correct answer and one mark will be deducted for every incorrect answer. Non-MCQs type questions do not hold any negative marking. No marks will be deducted for unattempted questions.
IIM has released the CAT percentile method to maintain complete transparency in the procedure of CAT results. CAT raw scores are converted into scaled scores and then into CAT percentile. Three steps that help in calculating CAT percentile involve:
Candidate score is evaluated section-wise, and then the overall score will be calculated by totaling the section-wise scores.
Raw scores of section-wise and overall scores are normalized to arrive at a scaled CAT score.
Normalized scores are converted into percentiles which are shown on the CAT scorecard.
CAT Percentile Calculation
For analyzing the performance of the candidates, the normalization procedure is down. To calculate the CAT percentile, scaled scores are made to incorporate. Calculating percentiles will remain the same for all the sections. More is the percentile, the greater will be the chances of selection. In the normalized process, the raw score obtained by the candidate is converted into a normalized score i.e. scaled up the score.
Let’s have a look at the below-mentioned steps for calculating CAT 2022 percentile:
Consider the total number of candidates who appeared for the CAT exam in all the three slots i.e. morning, afternoon and evening shifts. Let the total number of candidates be “N”.
Applicants must assign rank i.e. R which is based on the scaled scores obtained by the candidates in VARC i.e. candidate can take any of the three sections which appear for CAT 2022. Often, it is obtained that two or more candidates score identical scores in each section, identical rank will be assigned to them. Example: Candidates who have achieved highest scaled score in the VARC section, will be assigned Rank 1. Candidates obtaining the second highest score in the same section will be assigned rank 3.
After this, calculate the percentile score of candidate i.e. P of the candidate with rank (r) for the VARC section.
Percentile of Candidate = ((N- R) / N ) * 100
After this, candidates must round off the calculated percentile score. This can further be done up to two decimal points.
Example: CAT percentile score greater than or equal to 99.995 will be catered as 100.
CAT Normalization Process
CAT exam is conducted in different slots, so the normalization process is incorporated wherein the marks of each candidate are scaled in order to bring equity in the marking process. The normalization process is thus an established practice that is followed over the years to assess the performance.
CAT score are normalized in a way that ensures fairness in the assessment procedure.
The CAT exam is conducted in three different slots. For compensating the variation in the difficulty level of the exam across slots and maintain equality, raw scores will be subjected to this process.
The normalization process is mainly subjected to location and scales the differences of score distribution.
After normalization across different forms, scores will then be normalized across different sections.
The exam authority has not revealed the procedure.
Factors such as highest score, lowest score, mean score, median score, top 10 percentiles, lowest 10 percentiles are considered for normalization.
In CAT scorecard, normalized score is referred to as scaled up score. Thus, it can be converted to percentile scores for the purpose of shortlisting.
Normalization process of CAT is an established practice that helps in assessing the performance of the candidate across different sections.
Parameters for Considering CAT Normalization:
Top 10 percentile
lowest 10 percentile
CAT Scaled Score
As CAT is conducted in more than one slot, so different question papers are created which helps in analyzing the candidate’s performance. The difficulty level of sets varies. For ensuring fair delivery of scores, CAT provides a scaled score that is mainly extracted after the CAT normalization process.
