There are various types of resources found in nature. These resources can be broadly classified as :

(i) Inexhaustible Resources: These resources are present in abundant quantity in nature. They are not likely to be exhausted by human activities. For example sunlight, air, and water.

(ii) Exhaustible Resources: These resources are present in limited quantity in nature. They can be exhausted by human activities. For example coal, petroleum, natural gas, etc.

Coal: It is a hard substance that is black in colour. It is used as fuel for cooking food. It is used in thermal power plants to generate electricity. It is also used in several industries as fuel.

Coke: It is a tough, porous substance that is almost the purest form of carbon. It is used in the extraction of steel and in the extraction of many metals.

Coal Tar: It is a thick black liquid with an unpleasant smell. It is a mixture of about 200 substances. Products obtained from it are used for manufacturing substances like drugs, explosives, paints, plastics, perfumes, etc.

Coal Gas: It is obtained during the processing of coal to get coke. It is used as a fuel in many industries.

Petroleum: Petrol and diesel used as fuel in motor vehicles are obtained from a natural resource called petroleum.

Refining: Petroleum is a mixture of various constituents such as petroleum, gas, petrol, diesel, lubricating oil, paraffin wax, etc. Separating the constituents of petroleum is known as refining.

Natural Gas: It is a very important fossil fuel. It is stored under high pressure as compressed natural gas (CNG) and can be easily transported through pipes. It is used in power generation or as a fuel for transport vehicles. CNG is also used as a fuel for cooking as well as for industrial purposes.

Some Natural Resources are Limited:  Some natural resources like fossil fuels, forests, minerals, etc are exhaustible. Fossil fuels like coal and petroleum are obtained from dead animals. Thus, it takes millions of years for dead animals to be converted into these fuels. Moreover, the burning of these fuels causes air pollution which is one of the major reasons for global warming. Therefore, it is necessary that we use these fuels judiciously.
