NCERT Solutions Class 8 Science Chapter 12: Points to Remember

Students need to memorise the concepts to write good answers in the exam. They should not do rote memorisation and instead practice answer-writing. Embibe provides sample questions for NCERT Class 8 Science for. We have provided some important points to remember for NCERT Class 8 Science chapter 12 as mentioned below:

  • Friction: The opposing force acting when two surfaces in contact slide or tend to slide relative to one another.
  • Friction always acts in the direction opposite to the direction of the relative motion of contact surfaces.
  • Friction brings about wear and tear and increases energy consumption in operating machines.
  • Ball-bearing: A device used for reducing rolling friction, by making an axle to move over metal balls placed around it radially.
  • Lubricant: A material which, when applied between two surfaces in contact, reduces the friction.
  • Friction can be reduced by – (a) using lubricants, (b) using soap solutions, (c) using fine powders, (d) polishing surfaces, (e) streamlining, (f) converting sliding friction into rolling friction.
  • Friction is caused due to interlocking of irregularities of two surfaces in contact with each other.
  • Irregularities: Uneven projections on the surfaces of a body.
  • Limiting friction: The maximum force of static friction acting, when the surface of one body is about to slide over the surface of another body.
  • Rolling friction: Friction experienced by a body when made to move over roller/wheels.
  • Static friction: The force of friction acting between the contact surfaces, when one tries to move with respect to other.
