NCERT Solutions Class 8 Science Chapter 12

We have provided some important points to remember for NCERT Class 8 Science chapter 12 as mentioned below:

1. Force of Friction:

(i) Friction: The opposing force acting when two surfaces in contact slide or tend to slide relative to one another.

(ii) Friction always acts in the direction opposite to the direction of the relative motion of contact surfaces.

2. Friction: A Necessary Evil:

(i) Friction brings about wear and tear and increases energy consumption in operating machines.

3. Increasing and Decreasing Friction:

(i) Ball-bearing: A device used for reducing rolling friction, by making an axle to move over metal balls placed around it radially.

(ii) Lubricant: A material which, when applied between two surfaces in contact, reduces the friction.

(iii) Friction can be reduced by

(a) using lubricants

(b) using soap solutions

(c) using fine powders

(d) polishing surfaces

(e) streamlining

(f) converting sliding friction into rolling friction.

4. Factors Affecting Friction:

(i) Friction is caused due to interlocking of irregularities of two surfaces in contact with each other.

(ii) Irregularities: Uneven projections on the surfaces of a body.

(iii) Limiting friction: The maximum force of static friction acting, when the surface of one body is about to slide over the surface of another body.

(iv) Rolling friction: Friction experienced by a body when made to move over roller/wheels.

(v) Static friction: The force of friction acting between the contact surfaces, when one tries to move with respect to other.

FAQs on NCERT Solutions For Class 8 Science Chapter 12

Q1: What are the benefits of NCERT Solutions For Class 8 Science Chapter 12?

Ans: Students can clear their doubts anytime with NCERT Solutions For Class 8 Science Chapter 12 and increase their subject knowledge.

Q2: What is the name of Chapter 12 of Class 8 Science?

Ans: ‘Friction’ is the name of Chapter 12 of Class 8 Science.

Q3: How to download the NCERT Solutions For Class 8 Science Chapter 12

Ans: Students can download the NCERT Solutions For Class 8 Science Chapter 12 at Embibe for free in PDF format.

Q4: Explain why sliding friction is less than static friction.

Ans: When irregularities present in the surfaces of two objects in contact get interlocked with each other, friction comes into play. The interlocking is more in static friction compared to sliding friction because of the more surface in contact. Hence, the value of sliding friction is less than static friction.

Q5: Why do sportsmen use shoes with spikes?

Ans: Sportsmen use shoes with spikes because of the better grip given by spikes while running. This is because the force of friction between the shoes and the ground increases with the help of spikes.
