Let’s say you are cycling and suddenly something comes in front of you. What do you do? You quickly apply the brake and your bicycle stops. This happens due to something called friction. Friction can be seen in our day-to-day lives. Let’s look at another example. You are walking on a wet floor and it’s so slippery that you fell on the floor. This also happened due to friction.
Friction always acts opposite to the direction of the force you apply. For example, if you are pushing a box on the floor from point A to B then the friction existing between the surface of the floor and the surface of the box will be acting from B to A. This friction will always try to stop the box but it can only stop if the force applied is lesser than the force of friction.
Now, when we were saying that the floor is slippery, that means the friction at the surface is so less that even a small amount of force applied by you can easily overcome the frictional force. Thus, you will continue to move in the direction where you applied force and you will eventually slip. Now, let’s take the example of applying brakes when the cycle is moving. What is happening here is that you were already in motion and this motion was due to the force created in the process of pedalling. The application of brakes creates friction which eventually, exceeds the applied force and your bicycle comes to a stop.

A: When a body moves through a fluid, it experiences an opposing force which tries to oppose its motion through the fluid. This opposing force is known as the drag force. This frictional force depends on the shape of the body. By giving the objects a special shape, the force of friction acting on it can be minimized. Hence, it becomes easier for a body to move through the fluid.
