CBSE Class 9 Science Chapter 1: Overview

Everything is matter; the air we breathe, the food we eat, stones, clouds, stars, plants and animals, even a tiny drop of water or a particle of sand. The matter is something that occupies space (volume) and has mass. Since the beginning, human beings have been trying to understand their surroundings.

Before getting into the detailed NCERT solutions Class 9 Science chapter 1, let us have an overview of topics and sub-topics included in the chapter:

SectionTopic NameSummary
1.1Physical Nature of MatterThis subtopic talks about the nature of matter – whether it is continuous or particulate.
1.2Characteristics of Particles of MatterThis subtopic informs students about the three main characteristics of particles of matter – a) they have space between them b) they are continuously moving c) particles of matter attract each other
1.3States of MatterLearn about the three states of matter in this section, namely, the solid, the liquid, and the gaseous state.
1.4Can Matter Change its State? In this section, students understand what happens when we apply a change in pressure or temperature to matter.
1.5EvaporationIn this section students understand the important concept of ‘evaporation’ and the factors affecting it.

Q.1. Convert the following temperatures to celsius scale.
(a) 293 K
(b) 470 K

Solution: Kelvin is the primary unit of temperature (absolute scale) and degree celsius is commonly used along with it.

(a) We know,
Temperature in Kelvin = Temperature in °C+273
Temperature in °C = (Temperature in Kelvin – 273)
=293-273=20°C
Therefore, 293K=20°C.
(b) We know,
Temperature in Kelvin = Temperature in °C+273
Temperature in °C = (Temperature in Kelvin – 273)
=470-273=197°C
Therefore, 470K=197°C.

Q.2. Convert the following temperatures to Kelvin scale.
(a) 25°C
(b) 373°C

Solution: Kelvin is the primary unit of temperature (absolute scale) and degree celsius is commonly used along with it.

(a) We know,
Temperature in Kelvin = Temperature in °C+ 273
=25+273=298K
(b) We know,
Temperature in Kelvin = Temperature in °C+ 273
=373+273=646K

Q.3. Give reason for the following observation.
Naphthalene balls disappear with time without leaving any solid.

Solution: Naphthalene balls disappear with time without leaving any solid due to the phenomenon of sublimation. Sublimation is the change of state from a solid to a gas without the intervention of a liquid state. Thus, naphthalene balls keep on forming naphthalene vapours which disappear into the air with time without leaving any solid.

NCERT Solutions for Class 9 Science Chapter 1: Summary

Matter refers to everything that has mass and occupies space. Air and water, sugar and sand, hydrogen and oxygen, etc. The matter is made up of incredibly tiny particles. Particles of substance are drawn to one another because of their distance.

Based on interparticle forces and the arrangement of the particles, matter can be divided into three categories: solid, liquid, and gas. It is possible to change between these three different types of matter by varying the temperature and pressure. Refer to the table below to understand it better:
