**Q.1. A survey was conducted by a group of students as a part of their environment awareness program, in which they collected the following data regarding the number of plants in 20 houses in a locality. Find the mean number of plants per house.**

Which method did you use for finding the mean, and why?**Solution:** First of all, we have to find class marks xi for each interval.

We know that, class mark(xi)=upper classlimit + lower classlimit2

Now we may compute xi and fixi as following

Number of plants Number of houses fi xi fixi

From the table, we can see that Σfi=20 Σfixi=162

Mean x-=ΣfixiΣfi

=16220=8.1

Hence, mean number of plants per house is 8.1. Direct method is used here as values of class marks xi and fi are small.

**Q.2. Consider the following distribution of daily wages of 50 workers of a factory.**

**Find the mean daily wages of the workers of the factory by using an appropriate method.**

**Solution:** We will use step deviation method.

First, we have to find class mark for each interval.

We know that, xi=upper classlimit+lower classlimit2 Class size (h) of this data =20. Let us take 550 as assumed mean (a). Now, we can calculate di,ui and fiui as following:

Daily wages (in₹) Number of workers fi xi di=xi-550 ui=xi-550h fiui

From the table, we can see that,

Σfi=50

Σfixi=-12 Mean x-=a+ΣfiuiΣfih =550+-125020 =550-245 =550-4.8 =545.2 So, mean daily wages of the workers of the factory is ₹545.20

In this chapter, students will learn about Statistics** **– the branch of mathematics that deals with data collection, organisation, analysis, interpretation, and presentation.

The statistical analysis covers all aspects of data collection, including data collection design, survey design, and experiment design. While applying Statistics to a scientific, industrial or social problem, it is conventional to begin with a statistical population or a statistical model.

Two main statistical methods used in data analysis are descriptive statistics, which summarise data from a sample using indexes such as mean or standard deviation, and inferential statistics, which conclude data that are subject to random variation (e.g., observational errors, sampling variation).
